Sir Tristram Beresford, 1st Baronet
Sir Tristram Beresford, 1st Baronet (died 15 January 1673) was an Irish soldier and politician. He was the ancestor of the Marquesses of Waterford, the Barons Decies and the Beresford baronets, of William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford and Charles Beresford, 1st Baron Beresford. He was born the eldest son of Tristram Beresford, who had originated from Kent and settled in Ireland, and his wife Susannah Brooke. Beresford became manager of the Corporation of London's Londonderry Plantation and entered the Irish House of Commons in 1634 as the member for County Londonderry. He then represented the counties of Londonderry, Donegal and Tyrone from 1656 until 1658 in the Second Protectorate Parliament at Westminster. After the Restoration of 1660 he finally stood successfully for Londonderry in the Irish Parliament of 1661, holding the seat for the next five years. Marquess Of Waterford
Marquess of Waterford is a title in the Peerage of Ireland and the premier marquessate in that peerage. It was created in 1789 for George Beresford, 2nd Earl of Tyrone. It is presently held by Henry Beresford, 9th Marquess of Waterford. The Beresford family descends from Tristram Beresford, who originated from Kent but settled in Ireland in the 17th century. His eldest son Tristram Beresford sat as a member of the Irish House of Commons. On 5 May 1665 he was created a baronet, of Coleraine in County Londonderry, in the Baronetage of Ireland. His great-grandson (the title having descended from father to son), the fourth Baronet, married Lady Catherine, oldest daughter of James de la Poer, 3rd Earl of Tyrone (see Earl of Tyrone). A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Sir Randal Beresford, 2nd Baronet (died 19 October 1681) was an Irish politician and baronet. Early life He was the son of Sir Tristram Beresford, 1st Baronet and his first wife Anne Rowley, daughter of John Rowley of Castleroe, County Londonderry, the first Mayor of Derry, and Mary Gage. His paternal grandparents were Tristram Beresford, who was from Kent before settling in Ireland, and his wife Susannah Brooke. Career Beresford entered the Irish House of Commons in 1661, sitting for Coleraine until 1668. He served with Stephen Cuppage, who died and was replaced by William Jackson in 1666. Five years later, he succeeded his father as baronet. The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council is an honorary position bestowed upon a Citizen of Derry City & Strabane District in Northern Ireland, who is in practice a member of Derry and Strabane District Council, chosen by their peers on the Council to serve a one-year term.
