Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Baronet
Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Baronet (25 August 1805 – 21 December 1876) was an Anglo-Irish politician and landowner, who built Lissadell House, located in County Sligo. Background and education Born at Bath, Somerset, he was the son of Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 3rd Baronet and his wife Hannah, the daughter of Henry Irwin.Dod (1860), p. 125 In 1814, aged only nine, he succeeded his father as baronet. He was educated at Westminster School and went then to Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1826. Career During the period of the Great Famine, Sir Robert was accused of arbitrarily evicting starving tenant farmers from his land and packing them into leaky, overcrowded emigrant ships headed for Canada and America. However, other accounts insist that he mortgaged the estate to help feed his tenants and refused to accept any rents for the duration. Anglo-Irish people () denotes an ethnic, social and religious grouping who are mostly the descendants and successors of the English Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. Sir Henry William Gore-Booth, 5th Baronet (1 July 1843 – 13 January 1900), was a notable Arctic explorer, adventurer and landowner from Lissadell House, Sligo, Ireland. Antecedents The Gore Baronetcy, of Artarman in the County of Sligo, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 30 August 1760 for Booth Gore. His father, Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Baronet was an Anglo-Irish landowner who according to some sources was accused of evicting his starving tenant farmers during the period of the Great Irish famine and of packing them into coffin ships to emigrate. In contrast, other reports state that he mortgaged his estates and assisted his tenants by both providing them with food and refusing to accept any rents during the famine. Gore Baronets
There have been three baronetcies created for members of the Gore family, all in the Baronetage of Ireland. All three titles are extant. The family also holds two earldoms and a barony. Gore baronets of Magherabegg (1622) The Gore Baronetcy, ''of Magherabegg (or Manor Gore) in the County of Donegal'' was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 2 February 1622 for Paul Gore (shown also as 1st baronet of Manor Gore, the Anglicized version). Sir Francis Knox-Gore, 1st Baronet
Sir Francis Knox-Gore, 1st Baronet (1803 – 25 May 1873) was an Anglo-Irish baronet. Knox-Gore was the son of James Knox-Gore and Lady Maria Louisa Gore, daughter of Arthur Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College Dublin. Knox-Gore was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Sligo on 5 December 1831. In 1840 he served as High Sheriff of Mayo. Edward Robert King-Harman
Edward Robert King-Harman (3 April 1838 – 10 June 1888) was an Irish landlord and politician. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom between 1877 and 1888 as an Irish nationalist, and later Unionist, Member of Parliament. Early life King-Harman was the son of Lawrence Harman King-Harman and his wife Cecilia Johnstone of Stirling. His father was the younger son of Robert King, 1st Viscount Lorton and inherited from him the estates of Rockingham, County Roscommon, and Newcastle, Ballymahon, County Longford. King-Harman was educated at Eton and became a lieutenant in the 60th Rifles and captain in the Longford Militia. He inherited Rockingham which was a fine house built by John Nash, but altered in a less than sympathetic way in the late 19th century in order to provide more accommodation. John Ffolliott
John Ffolliott (28 December 1798 – 11 February 1868) was an Irish landowner and Member of Parliament. Biography He was the eldest son of John Ffolliott of Hollybrook House, County Sligo, by his wife Frances, sister of Sir William Jackson Homan, 1st Baronet. He was descended from a common ancestor with the Ffolliots of Worcestershire. In January 1814, while still a minor, he inherited the Worcestershire property of his great-uncle John (son of John Folliott), but he barred the entail in 1822 and sold the manors of Lickhill and Lower Mitton to Joseph Craven of Steeton. Ffolliott sat in Parliament for County Sligo from September 1841. He was a Conservative, and in 1846 he voted in favour of agricultural protection. Denis Maurice O'Conor
Denis Maurice O'Conor ( ga, Donnchadh Muirgheas Ó Conchubhair Donn; 1840 – 26 July 1883) was an Irish barrister and Liberal Party politician who represented County Sligo in the House of Commons. The second son of Denis O'Conor, O'Conor Don and the brother of Charles Owen O'Conor, O'Conor Don, Denis Maurice O'Conor was educated at Downside School and the University of London, graduating MA in 1861 and LLD in 1866. He was called to the bar by the Middle Temple in Easter Term, 1866. A magistrate for County Roscommon, he was High Sheriff of Roscommon for 1865. A Liberal and a Home Ruler, O'Conor represented County Sligo in the House of Commons from December 1868 until his death, at his residence in Queen's Gate, Kensington, on 26 July 1883. Edward Henry Cooper
Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Henry Cooper (1827 – 26 February 1902) was an Irish officer in the British Army, a landlord in County Sligo, and a Conservative politician. At the age of 36 the Dublin-born soldier inherited Markree Castle in County Sligo from his uncle, and left the army to manage his country estate. As one of the major landlords in the county, he assumed many of the roles which still accompanied that status. He promptly became a local magistrate, and in 1865 was returned unopposed by the county to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Having followed five previous Cooper landlords of Markree to serve as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sligo, his unpopularity as a landlord led to his defeat in 1868, after one term. He then reactivated his uncle's Markree Observatory, and commissioned archaeological drawings of County Sligo. Edward Joshua Cooper
Edward Joshua Cooper (May 1798 – 23 April 1863) was an Irish landowner, politician and astronomer from Markree Castle in County Sligo. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1841 and from 1857 to 1859, but is best known for his astronomy, and as the creator of Markree Observatory. His observatory was home to the largest refracting (telescope with a lens) of the 1830s (an almost 14 inch astronomical grade Cauchoix of Paris lens, the largest in the World), and the asteroid 9 Metis was discovered there in the 1840s by his assistant. Several astronomical catalogs were also produced in the 19th century there.
