Sir Richard Cust, 1st Baronet
Sir Richard Cust, 1st Baronet (23 June 1622 – 30 August 1700) was a British barrister and Member of Parliament. Cust was the son of Samuel Cust and Ann Burrell. He represented Lincolnshire in the House of Commons in 1653 and Stamford from 1679 to 1685. In 1677 he was created a Baronet, of Stamford in the County of Lincoln. Cust married Beatrice Pury, daughter of William Pury, on 29 August 1644. He died in August 1700, aged 78, and was succeeded by his grandson Richard Cust. The latter's son Sir John Cust, 3rd Baronet, served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1761 to 1770. Lincolnshire was a county constituency of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which returned two Members of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons from 1290 until 1832. History The constituency consisted of the historic county of Lincolnshire, excluding the city of Lincoln which had the status of a county in itself after 1409. (Although Lincolnshire contained four other boroughs, Boston, Grantham, Great Grimsby and Stamford, each of which elected two MPs in its own right for part of the period when Lincolnshire was a constituency, these were not excluded from the county constituency, and owning property within the borough could confer a vote at the county election. Baron Brownlow
Baron Brownlow, of Belton in the County of Lincoln, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1776 for Sir Brownlow Cust, 4th Baronet. The Cust family descends from Richard Cust (1622-1700) of The Black Friars, Stamford, who represented Lincolnshire and Stamford in Parliament. In 1677 he was created a baronet, "of Stamford in the County of Lincoln". He was succeeded by his grandson Richard Cust, 2nd Baronet, who married Anne Brownlow, daughter of Sir William Brownlow, 4th Baronet, "of Humby", Lincolnshire, and sister and sole heiress of John Brownlow, 1st Viscount Tyrconnel, 5th Baronet of Belton House, Lincolnshire. Baronets In The Baronetage Of England
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). Charles Bertie (senior)
Captain Charles Bertie (c. 1640 – 22 March 1711), of Uffington, near Stamford, Lincolnshire, was a British administrator, diplomat, and Tory politician who sat in the English House of Commons, English and House of Commons of Great Britain, British House of Commons between 1678 and 1711. He rose to serve as Secretary to the Treasury under his brother-in-law, the Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds, Earl of Danby, from 1673 until 1679 but did not wield significant political power thereafter. He did, however, twice enjoy the office of Treasurer of the Ordnance before his death in 1711. Early life and travels abroad Bertie was the fifth son of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey by his first wife, Martha Cokayne. He was educated first at a school of Charles Croke at Amersham and then probably at Westminster School. Stamford was a United Kingdom constituencies, constituency in the county of Lincolnshire of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons for the Parliament of England to 1706 then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Peregrine Bertie (senior)
Peregrine Bertie (ca. 1634 – 3 January 1701) was an English politician, the second son of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey. A member of the court party, later the Tories, he sat for Stamford from 1665 to 1679, and from 1685 to 1687. Most active in Parliament during the 1670s, he and other members of his family were consistent political supporters of Bertie's brother-in-law, the Duke of Leeds throughout several reigns. While he never achieved significant political stature, he did hold several minor government offices: he was a captain in the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards until 1679, and a commissioner of the Alienation Office and a customs officer. The death of his wife's brother brought the couple an estate in Waldershare, Kent, where Bertie ultimately settled. He sat for Westbury after the Glorious Revolution, but showed little political activity compared to others of his family.
