Sir John Ramsden, 3rd Baronet
Sir John Ramsden, 3rd Baronet (1699–1769) of Byram and Longley Hall, Yorkshire, was a British landowner and Independent Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1754. Early life Ramsden was baptised on 21 March 1699, the eldest son of Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baronet, of Byram and Longley Hall and his wife Elizabeth Lowther, daughter of John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale. He was admitted at Clare College, Cambridge on 4 April 1718. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy on 27 June 1736. Career At the 1727 British general election, Ramsden was returned as Member of Parliament for Appleby by his uncle, Henry Lowther, 3rd Viscount Lonsdale. He was an independent Whig and voted with the Government in 1729 on the civil list arrears, in 1733 on the Excise Bill, and in 1734 on the repeal of the Septennial Act. Byram, North Yorkshire
Byram is a village in the Selby District in North Yorkshire, England. It lies east of Castleford, across the River Aire in West Yorkshire. Byram is the principal settlement in the civil parish of Byram cum Sutton. The toponym is from the Old English ''bȳrum'', the dative plural of ''bȳre'', so means "at the byres or cowsheds". Byram was historically a hamlet, part of the Township (England), township of Byram cum Poole in the ancient parish of Brotherton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Byram cum Poole became a separate civil parish in 1866, but in 1891 was merged with the civil parish of Sutton, Selby, Sutton to form the civil parish of Byram cum Sutton. Byram grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. Byram Hall was a large country house east of the village, in Byram Park. Sir James Lowther, 4th Baronet
Sir James Lowther, 4th Baronet, FRS (1673 – 2 January 1755) was an English landowner, industrialist and Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons for 54 years between 1694 and 1755. His ownership and development of coal mines around Whitehaven in Cumberland gave him substantial revenues, and he was reputed the richest commoner in England. Early life Lowther was baptised on 5 August 1673 at St Giles in the Fields, London, the second son of Sir John Lowther, 2nd Baronet and Jane Leigh. Educated privately in London, he attended Queen's College, Oxford and the Middle Temple. On the death of his father in 1706, the baronetcy was inherited by James's elder brother Christopher, but Christopher (whose drinking and gambling had led his father to disinherit him) was cut off with an annuity of about £100 a year and the family properties passed to James, who subsequently inherited the baronetcy in 1731, when his brother died without children. Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baronet
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Ramsden, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. One creation is extant as of 2008 The Ramsden, later Pennington, later Pennington-Ramsden Baronetcy, of Byram in the County of York, was created in the Baronetage of England on 30 November 1689 for John Ramsden in honour of the services he had given during the Glorious Revolution. The manor of Huddersfield had been in the Ramsden family since 1599, and the baronets retained this manor until 1920, when it was sold to the Corporation of the County Borough of Huddersfield, along with the substantial Ramsden Estate. The third Baronet sat as Member of Parliament for Appleby. The fourth Baronet represented Grampound in the House of Commons. Philip Honywood (died 1785)
General Philip Honywood (''c.''1710 – 21 February 1785) was a British army officer who sat in the House of Commons from 1754 to 1784. Honywood was the fifth son of Robert Honywood and his wife Mary Sandford, daughter of Sir Richard Sandford, Bart. and sister and heiress of Sir Richard Sandford, 3rd Baronet of Howgill Castle. He succeeded his brother to the Marks Hall estate in Essex in 1755. Military career He joined the Army as a cornet and rose through the ranks to become a major in 1741. At the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, he received at least twenty-three broadsword wounds and two musket shots which were never removed, distinguishing himself by his personal valour. He was afterwards promoted to a lieutenant-colonelcy in the regiment of his uncle, also Philip Honywood. He took part in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and was seriously wounded at the skirmish at Clifton in 1745.
