Sir James May, 1st Baronet
Sir James May, 1st Baronet (6 November 1723 – 8 November 1811) was an Anglo-Irish politician. May was the son of James May and Letitia Ponsonby, daughter of William Ponsonby, 1st Viscount Duncannon. He was the Member of Parliament for County Waterford between 1759 and 1797.E. M. Anglo-Irish people () denotes an ethnic, social and religious grouping who are mostly the descendants and successors of the English Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. They mostly belong to the Anglican Church of Ireland, which was the established church of Ireland until 1871, or to a lesser extent one of the English dissenting churches, such as the Methodist church, though some were Roman Catholics. They often defined themselves as simply "British", and less frequently "Anglo-Irish", "Irish" or "English". Many became eminent as administrators in the British Empire and as senior army and naval officers since Kingdom of England and Great Britain were in a real union with the Kingdom of Ireland until 1800, before politically uniting into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland) for over a century. Baronets In The Baronetage Of Ireland
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). A baronet is addressed as "Sir" (just as is a knight) or "Dame" in the case of a baronetess, but ranks above all knighthoods and damehoods in the order of precedence, except for the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Thistle, and the dormant Order of St Patrick. May Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname May, one in the Baronetage of Ireland and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The May Baronetcy, of Mayfield in the County of Waterford, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 30 June 1763 for the Anglo-Irish politician James May. The second Baronet represented Belfast in the House of Commons between 1801 and 1814. The title became extinct on the death of the fourth Baronet in 1834.
