Sir Edward Crofton, 2nd Baronet
Sir Edward Crofton, 2nd Baronet (11 October 1748 – 30 September 1797) was an Irish politician. Crofton was the son of Sir Marcus Lowther-Crofton, 1st Baronet and his wife, Catherine (née Crofton) and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1784. He served as High Sheriff of Roscommon for 1773 and then sat in the Irish House of Commons as representative for County Roscommon from 1775 until his death in 1797. His sister Susanna married the prominent judge Peter Metge. The two men apparently quarrelled and fought a duel, which excited some comments even in an era when duelling was common. In 1797 he was offered a peerage but died shortly afterwards, aged 48, before the patent had been completed. The honour was instead bestowed, on 1 December 1797, on his wife Anne, Lady Crofton (d. 1817), who was created Baroness Crofton in the Peerage of Ireland. Maurice Mahon, 1st Baron Hartland
Maurice Mahon, 1st Baron Hartland (21 June 1738 – 4 January 1819), was an Irish politician and landowner. He and his sons intermittently represented County Roscommon in the Parliament of Ireland and the United Kingdom Parliament. He was able to transform his support of the Union of Great Britain and Ireland into a peerage, but was frustrated in his subsequent desire to become a viscount. Mahon was the son of Thomas Mahon and Hon. Jane, daughter of Maurice Crosbie, 1st Baron Brandon, and Lady Elizabeth Fitzmaurice. He was born in Strokestown. On 17 June 1765, he married Hon. Catherine (died March 1834), daughter of Stephen Moore, 1st Viscount Mount Cashell and Alicia Colville. They had three sons: Thomas (1766–1835), Stephen (1768–1828), and Maurice (1772–1845). Maurice's father Thomas died in 1782, and Maurice succeeded to the family's Strokestown estate. Crofton Family (Anglo-Irish Aristocracy)
The Crofton Family is an Anglo-Irish noble family holding titles in the Peerage of Ireland and The Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Baron Crofton The Crofton family is divided into three main branches, all holding titles in their own right. The Crofton estate in the townland of Ballymurray in County Roscommon was first granted to John Crofton during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He was the first occupier, having been appointed Auditor General in 1584. In addition to this estate, he also obtained extensive grants of lands elsewhere in the county as well as in counties Leitrim and Sligo. It was not until 1661 that a Crofton obtained a title however, when Edward Crofton became a Baronet of the Mote for services rendered to Charles II during the Cromwellian rebellion. Baronets In The Baronetage Of Ireland
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). A baronet is addressed as "Sir" (just as is a knight) or "Dame" in the case of a baronetess, but ranks above all knighthoods and damehoods in the order of precedence, except for the Order of the Garter, the Order of the Thistle, and the dormant Order of St Patrick. Baron Crofton
Baron Crofton is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1797 (as Baroness Crofton) for Dame Anne Crofton. She was the widow of Sir Edward Crofton, 2nd Baronet, of the Mote, who had represented Roscommon in the Irish House of Commons and had been offered a peerage just before his death. The peerage was instead bestowed upon his widow. She was succeeded by her grandson, the second Baron, who had already succeeded as fourth Baronet. He sat in the House of Lords as an Irish Representative Peer from 1840 to 1869 and served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) in the three Conservative administrations of the Earl of Derby and in Benjamin Disraeli's first government. His son, the third Baron, served as an Irish Representative Peer between 1873 and 1912 and was also State Steward to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. George King, 3rd Earl Of Kingston
George King, 3rd Earl of Kingston (9 April 1771 – 18 October 1839), styled Viscount Kingsborough from 1797 to 1799, was an Irish nobleman. He was the son of Robert King, 2nd Earl of Kingston of Mitchelstown Castle, who he succeeded in 1799. He was returned as a Member of the Irish House of Commons for County Roscommon in 1798, vacating the seat in the following year when he succeeded his father to the peerage and briefly taking his seat in the Irish House of Lords before it was abolished in 1800 after the union with Great Britain. He was created Baron Kingston in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1821, thus giving him and his descendants an automatic seat in the UK House of Lords. In 1823, he demolished the existing Palladian house on the Mitchelstown estate and replaced it with a new castle designed by James and George Richard Pain.
