Sir Edward Blackett, 4th Baronet
Sir Edward Blackett, 4th Baronet (9 April 17193 February 1804) was a baronet and member of the British House of Commons for Northumberland. Blackett was the son of John Blackett of Newby Park (the second son of Sir Edward Blackett, 2nd Baronet) and his wife Patience Wise. He sold Newby Hall, Ripon, Yorkshire, the family seat since 1690, to William Welland in 1748. In 1756 he succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his uncle Sir Edward Blackett, 3rd Baronet. He was High Sheriff of Northumberland 1757–1758 and in 1768 became MP for Northumberland until 1774. Sir William Middleton, 5th Baronet
Sir William Middleton 5th Baronet (1738–1795), was a British soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1795. Middleton was the son of Sir John Lambert Middleton, 4th Baronet of Belsay Castle, a former merchant, and his wife Anne Perkins, a widow and daughter of Sir Nathaniel Hodges, and was born on 6 June 1738. He joined the Royal Horse Guards and was Cornet in 1756 and Lieutenant in 1759. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Minden on 1 August 1759, and was left lame for life. In 1762 he became captain. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy on 2 March 1768 and retired from the army in 1774. He married Jane Monck, daughter of Lawrence Monck of Caenby, Lincolnshire on 20 April 1774, In 1774 Middleton was elected as Member of Parliament for Northumberland in a contested election when he came second in the poll. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. There have been two baronetcies created for members of the Blackett family, both in the Baronetage of England. One creation is extant as of 2013. The Blackett family can be traced back to the Blacketts/Blakheveds of Woodcroft, County Durham, some of whom became highly successful in the lead and coal mining industries in Northumberland and County Durham. The Blackett Baronetcy, of Newcastle in the County of Northumberland, was created in the Baronetage of England on 12 December 1673 for William Blackett, Member of Parliament for Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Blackett was succeeded by his elder son, Edward, the second Baronet who represented Ripon and Northumberland in the House of Commons and built Newby Hall. Matfen Hall
Matfen Hall is a 19th-century country mansion in Matfen, Northumberland, England, the seat of the Blackett baronets and now also a hotel and country golf club. It is a Grade II* listed building. The manor of West Matfen was owned in the 13th century by Philip de Ulcote and passed through his sisters to Felton, by marriage to Hastings and later to Lawson. In 1625 the estate was bought by Lancelot Fenwick of a branch of the old-established local family. The manor and manor house, West Matfen High Hall, was sold in 1680 to John Douglas, Town Clerk of Newcastle. His granddaughter and Douglas heiress married Sir Edward Blackett, Bt., in 1757, thereby bringing the estate into the Blackett family. The present house was built to replace the old manor, in 1832 for Sir William Blackett, 6th Baronet. The impressive Jacobean-style mansion has a three-storey seven-bay entrance front. The 1774 British general election returned members to serve in the House of Commons of the 14th Parliament of Great Britain to be held, after the merger of the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland in 1707. Lord North's government was returned with a large majority. The opposition consisted of factions supporting the Marquess of Rockingham and the Earl of Chatham, both of whom referred to themselves as Whigs. North's opponents referred to his supporters as Tories, but no Tory party existed at the time and his supporters rejected the label.
