Sir Brian Urquhart Award
The Sir Brian Urquhart Award is given annually by the United Nations Association – UK for distinguished service to the United Nations. The award celebrates Urquhart’s work on behalf of the UN, and is presented to individuals whose own efforts reflect his contribution. Urquhart was the second person recruited to the UN Secretariat in 1945 and worked with the Executive Committee of the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations to establish the administrative framework of the organisation that had been created by the U.N. Charter. Having served at the United Nations for four decades, Urquhart undertook the direction of peacekeeping operations, in the Middle East, Cyprus, Kashmir, Lebanon and the Congo. Urquhart retired in 1986 at the rank of Under-Secretary-General. He is currently a member of UNA-UK's expert advisory panel. Richard Jolly
Sir Arthur "Richard" Jolly, (born 30 June 1934) is a leading development economist who was named one of the fifty key thinkers globally in this field of economics. Jolly currently serves as Honorary Professor and Research Associate of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex focusing on issues of world development and the role of the UN in global governance. From 1982 to 2000 he was an Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, first as deputy executive director of UNICEF and from 1996 as Coordinator of the UNDP’s Human Development Report. Zeinab Badawi
Zeinab Badawi ( ar, زينب بدوي; born October 1959) is a Sudanese-British television and radio journalist. She was the first presenter of the ''ITV Morning News'' (later known as '' ITV News at 5:30''), and co-presented ''Channel 4 News'' with Jon Snow from 1989 to 1998), before joining BBC News. Badawi was the presenter of ''World News Today'' broadcast on both BBC Four and BBC World News, and ''Reporters'', a weekly showcase of reports from the BBC. Early life Badawi was born in October 1959 in Sudan and has lived in Britain since the age of two. Her great-grandfather, Sheikh Babiker Badri, fought against Kitchener's British forces at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 and pioneered women's education in Sudan. Andrew James Gilmour (born March 1964) is CEO of the Berghof Foundation. He was formerly United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, until 2019, and also served as Director for Political, Peacekeeping, Humanitarian and Human Rights affairs in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, from 2012 to 2016. Frank Ashcroft Judd, Baron Judd, (28 March 1935 – 17 April 2021) was a British Labour politician. He was a Senior Fellow of Saferworld NGO from 1994 to 2002, and from 2002 to 2015, a trustee. Christine Chinkin
Christine Mary Chinkin is a Professor of International Law and founding Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the William W. Cook Global Law Professor at the University of Michigan Law School. She was a member of the four-person United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict created by the United Nations Human Rights Council. From January 2010, she is a member of the Human Rights Advisory Panel of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. She is the Chair of the International Law Association, appointed in 2021. David Hugh Alexander Hannay, Baron Hannay of Chiswick (born 28 September 1935) is a British diplomat. Biography Hannay was born in London and educated at Craigflower Preparatory School, Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1959, and was initially posted to positions in Tehran and Kabul. Starting in 1965 and continuing into the early 1970s, he was a representative of the British government in discussions which led to the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Community in 1973. Ian Martin (born 10 August 1946) is an English human rights activist/advisor and sometime United Nations official. His most recent UN assignment was as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya. From 2015 to 2018 he was Executive Director of Security Council Report. Early life Martin was educated at Brentwood School in Brentwood, Essex and graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge with first class honours in history and economics. Margaret Anstee
Dame Margaret Joan Anstee, DCMG (25 June 1926 – 25 August 2016) was a British diplomat who served at the United Nations for over four decades (1952–93), rising to the rank of an Under-Secretary-General in 1987. She was the first woman to hold this position. Early life and education Anstee was born on 25 June 1926 at 2 Albert Villas, Writtle, Essex. She was the only child of Edward Curtis Anstee, a printer, and Annie Adaliza, née Mills, a domestic servant. She grew up in Chelmsford, Essex, in rural England.
