Sion Mills Cricket Club
Sion Mills Cricket Club is a cricket club in Sion Mills, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, playing in Qualifying League 1 of the North West League, having dropped out of the North West Senior League before the 2015 season. The club was founded in 1864, under the patronage of the Herdman family, the local mill owners. It has won the North West Senior League on 28 occasions and the Cup 29 times. The club is remembered internationally as the host of the famous victory by Ireland against the West Indies in 1969. In 1947, Sion Mills entered the NCU Challenge Cup and won it at the first attempt, also doing the North West "double" of league and cup in the same season. Sion reached eleven North West cup finals between 1945 and 1962, and lost only one, also winning six league titles during the same period. Philip Verant Simmons (born 18 April 1963) is a Trinidadian cricket coach and former cricketer who was an all-rounder played as an opening batsman, a medium-fast bowler and a slip fielder. He is the current coach of the West Indies cricket team. Early life Simmons' first home was in Arima, Trinidad, a few miles outside Port of Spain. Stuart Robert Thompson (born 15 August 1991) is an Irish cricketer. Thompson is left-handed batsman who bowls right-arm medium-fast. He was one of the eleven cricketers to play in Ireland's first ever Test match, against Pakistan, in May 2018. John Francis Mooney (born 10 February 1982) is a former Irish cricketer. A left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium fast bowler, Mooney made his first-class debut in 2004. He had previously represented Ireland in the Under-19s World Cup of 2000 and has captained Ireland A. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2006 in Ireland's inaugural match in the format. NCU Challenge Cup
The NCU Challenge Cup, also called the NCU Senior Challenge Cup and the NCU Senior Cup, is the most important provincial cricket knock-out cup of the NCU jurisdiction in Ireland. The competition began in 1887, with eleven clubs participating in the first competition, North Down eventually beating North of Ireland in the final at Ormeau. The Cup is open to teams playing in the Premier League and Section 1 of the NCU Senior League. It is sponsored by Arthur J Gallagher and marketed as the Arthur J Gallagher Challenge Cup. Matches consist of one innings per side, with fifty overs bowled per innings. Where matches are interrupted or delayed because of weather, the number of overs may be reduced to a minimum of 20. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out").
