Sintra Air Base
Sintra Air Base ( pt, Base Aérea de Sintra) , officially designated as Air Base No. 1 ( pt, Base Aérea Nº 1, BA1), is a Portuguese Air Force base located in the Sintra Municipality, Portugal. The base is home to a flight training squadron and the Portuguese Air Force Academy. History The origins of the air base date back to the creation of the Portuguese Army's School of Military Aeronautics ( pt, Escola de Aeronáutica Militar, EAM) on May 14, 1914. The school was originally located at Vila Nova da Rainha and was later transferred to Granja do Marquês on February 5, 1920. In October 1939 the school was disbanded and the base was designated as Air Base No. 1. Since its creation it has been home to the main training and instruction of the Portuguese Air Force's pilots and technicians, having been base to de Havilland Tiger Moth, North American T-6 Texan, Cessna T-37 Tweet, and other flight training aircraft. 102 Squadron "''Panchos''" () was an elementary flight training squadron of the Portuguese Air Force disbanded in 1992. Formed in 1962, the squadron administered air force training and performed at air shows throughout Portugal. Between 1963 and its disbandment in 1992, the squadron lost nine pilots. Asas De Portugal
The () was a flight demonstration team created in 1977 integrated with ''Esquadra'' 103 (103 Squadron) of the Portuguese Air Force. It was Portugal's national aerobatic flying team and flew two ex-German Air Force Dassault-Breguet/Dornier Alpha Jets. History In 1977, Asas de Portugal was created by order of the Air Force Chief of Staff (CEMFA), with the objective to represent the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) at the International Air Tattoo air festival. This was the third aerobatics team established by the PoAF, after two teams of the 1950s — the '' Dragões'' (Dragons) and the ''São Jorge'' (Saint George) teams. Asas de Portugal operated the Cessna T-37C for 13 years while integrated with the 102 Squadron ''Panchos''. The Air Museum ( pt, Museu do Ar) is an aviation museum of the Portuguese Air Force located at Sintra Air Base and with spaces at Ovar and Alverca. History The museum dates back to the ''Aero Clube de Portugal'' in 1909 and was created in 1968 in a former Military Aviation hangar at Alverca. Opening for the first time to the public on July 1, 1971. In 2009, due to the growth of the collection, a new site at the Sintra Air Base complex was created for the museum and part of the collection was transferred there.
