Singleton Hospital
Singleton Hospital ( cy, Ysbyty Singleton) is a general hospital in Sketty Lane, Swansea, Wales. It is managed by Swansea Bay University Health Board. History The first stage of the hospital, which included outpatients' facilities, was completed in 1957. Work recommenced in 1963, and the second stage, which allowed the closure of the aging Swansea Hospital in St. Helen's Road, was completed in 1968. Services The hospital adjoins the Singleton Park Campus of Swansea University where there is a nursing school and a school of medicine. The Maggie's Cancer Care Centre for South West Wales, which was designed by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, is located in the grounds of Singleton Hospital. There is also a GP-led Minor Injuries Unit. The hospital benefits from its own Hospital Radio Station, Radio City 1386AM, which has been part of the hospital. Swansea Bay University Health Board
Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) ( cy, Bwrdd lechyd Prifysgol Bae Abertawe) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, in the south-west of Wales. Established as Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board (ABMUHB) in 2009, it was renamed and had its boundaries altered on 1 April 2019. In February 2019 it was decided to rename it ''Swansea Bay University Health Board'' and to alter the boundary with the Cwm Taf University Health Board (now Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board). Kisho Kurokawa
(April 8, 1934 – October 12, 2007) was a leading Japanese architect and one of the founders of the Metabolist Movement. Biography Born in Kanie, Aichi, Kurokawa studied architecture at Kyoto University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1957. He then attended University of Tokyo, under the supervision of Kenzo Tange. Kurokawa received a master's degree in 1959. Kurokawa then went on to study for a doctorate of philosophy, but subsequently dropped out in 1964. Kisho Kurokawa was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Architecture by the Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia in Sept. 7, 2002. With colleagues, he cofounded the Metabolist Movement in 1960, whose members were known as Metabolists. Morriston Hospital
Morriston Hospital ( cy, Ysbyty Treforys) is a 750-bed hospital located in Cwmrhydyceirw near Morriston in Swansea, Wales. It is managed by Swansea Bay University Health Board. Alongside its role as a district general hospital, Morriston is a teaching hospital for medical students of Swansea University Medical School. History The site was originally occupied by Maes-y-Gwernen Hall, a 19th-century farmhouse which was acquired by William Williams MP in 1885. Williams's son, Jeremiah Williams, inherited the house in 1904 and invited David Lloyd George to stay there in 1918. An emergency medical hospital was built on the site in 1942. By the late 1970s the hospital needed modernising. The design, which was undertaken by William Simpson using a nucleus layout which was capable of expansion, was announced in December 1976 and planning permission granted in March 1978. About the service Radio City 1386AM, is one of the longest running Hospital Radio station in Wales. History The Swansea Hospitals Radio service was founded on 1 August 1966 by Robert Rees, David Vaughan and Clive Thomas - three school friends who had been watching a television programme on radio in hospitals run by voluntary groups. Singleton Park
Singleton Park ( cy, Parc Singleton) is the largest urban park in the city of Swansea. It is located in Sketty. The park comprises 250 acres of land. An ornamental garden is located to the south, near the entrance to Swansea University, and a walled botanical garden is located in the centre of the park. On the south-western corner, past the hospital and the university, there is a boating lake with pedalos available, as well as a Crazy Golf course. History The park was originally part of the Vivian family estate, which was purchased by Swansea County Borough Council in 1919 for use as a public park. The park superintendent Daniel Bliss, who was trained at Kew Gardens was responsible for the conception of the Singleton Farm botanical gardens and Ornamental Gardens. Maggie's Centres
Maggie's centres are a network of drop-in centres across the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, which aim to help anyone who has been affected by cancer. They are not intended as a replacement for conventional cancer therapy, but as a caring environment that can provide support, information and practical advice. They are located near, but are detached from, existing NHS hospitals. The Scottish registered charity (registration number SC024414) which promotes, builds and runs the centres is formally named the Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Trust, but refers to itself simply as Maggie's.
