Singapore Hockey Federation
The Singapore Hockey Federation is the sports governing body, governing body of field hockey in Singapore. It is affiliated to IHF International Hockey Federation and AHF Asian Hockey Federation. The headquarters of the federation are in Singapore. Mathavan Devadas is the President of the Singapore Hockey Federation and Abdul Samad bin Mohamed Ismail is the General Secretary. History The history of field hockey in Singapore traces back to 1902 during British rule, during which the Royal Engineers introduced the sport at the Singapore Recreation Club. Eventually the Singapore Hockey Association was formed on 8 July 1931. The Association was formed under the auspices of Donald Hoblyn and the Police Sports Association. O.R.S Bateman was the first President of SHA. Later in 1939, the Singapore Women’s Hockey Association (SWHA) was also formed. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. International Hockey Federation
The Fédération Internationale de Hockey (English: International Hockey Federation), commonly known by the acronym and initialism, acronym FIH, is the international governing body of field hockey and indoor field hockey. Its headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland. FIH is responsible for field hockey's major international tournaments, notably the Hockey World Cup. The Singapore national field hockey team represents Singapore in men's international field hockey competitions. History Singapore has competed only once in the Olympics, in field hockey at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. The men's field hockey tournament at the 1956 Summer Olympics was the eighth edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympics. It was contested from 23 November to 6 December, with twelve participating teams. Only men competed in field hockey at these Games. 1973 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games
The 1973 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, officially known as the 7th Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held in Singapore from 1 to 8 September 1973 with 16 sports featured in the games. This was the first time Singapore hosted the games. Singapore is the fourth nation to host the Southeast Asian Games after Thailand, Burma and Malaysia.
