Sing To The Dawn (2008 Film)
''Sing to the Dawn'' is a 2008 Singaporean computer-animated musical drama film. The film was produced by Infinite Frameworks, a Batam-based animation studio, Mediacorp Raintree Pictures, Media Development Authority and Scorpio East Pictures. It is loosely adapted from the short story by Minfong Ho that was first published in 1975. The film was released on 30 October 2008 in Singapore, and later in Korea, Malaysia and Russia. It has screened at ''Pusan International Film Festival'' in South Korea and Santa Monica, USA. A remake of the film, named ''Meraih Mimpi (Dream On),'' was released in Indonesia on 16 September 2009. Philip Mitchell (writer)
Philip Mitchell is an English author, playwright, poet and translator. Born in Manchester, England he is an established author with BBC Radio Drama and was a question-setter on the UK game show ''Bacha Hi O'Ma!'' (the Welsh equivalent of ''Blind Date'') but is perhaps best known for his acclaimed translation of Caradog Prichard's Welsh language novel ''Un Nos Ola Leuad'', as ''One Moonlit Night'' (). The translation was adapted for broadcast as a radio play (by Mitchell himself) and was transmitted on BBC Radio 4. It was also adapted for the stage and was performed at several theatres including Theatr Clwyd in Mold, Theatr Gwynedd in Bangor, and The Young Vic in London. Minfong Ho
Minfong Ho is a Chinese–American writer. Her works frequently deal with the lives of people living in poverty in Southeast Asian countries. Despite being fiction, her stories are always set against the backdrop of real events, such as the student movement in Thailand in the 1970s and the Cambodian refugee problem with the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. Her simple yet touching language and her optimistic themes have made her writing popular among children as well as young adults. ''Sing to the Dawn'' is a story by Chinese-American author Minfong Ho, which was originally published as a short story and was awarded first prize by the Council of Interracial Books for Children in New York City in 1975. It was later extended to a full-length novel. Plot summary Dawan, a young village girl, gets first place in an examination and wins a scholarship to study in a city school. Her brother, Kwai, places second in the examination and is initially jealous, creating a rift between the two previously-close siblings. This hostility is further exacerbated by Dawan's father, who feels that the city is no place for a girl, and that Dawan should give in to Kwai and let him go to the city instead of her. Dawan eventually overcomes these obstacles and proves to herself and to others that she is fully capable of handling the scholarship and the responsibility it entails.
