South San Francisco is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States, located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is colloquially known as "South City". The population was 66,105 at the 2020 census. History Prior to European exploration, the northern San Francisco peninsula was inhabited by the Ramaytush, a linguistic sub-group of the Ohlone people. KSQQ (96.1 FM) is a world ethnic radio station broadcasting in the Chinese and Portuguese languages. The station is owned by Coyote Communications and licensed to Morgan Hill, California, with a translator, K277BN, in San Martin, California. It serves the greater San Francisco Bay Area from North Santa Clara County to Marin County. Its studios are in San Jose, and it has a transmitter site just south of the city limits. As the Sunol Grade is reached, KYMX, an adult contemporary station from the Central Valley cuts off KSQQ's signal almost completely. The signal has difficulty reaching the Tri-Valley area because of rough terrain. KEST (1450 AM) is a brokered time radio station in San Francisco, California. Most of the station's programming is in Asian languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese. It also airs some South Asian, Greek and German programs as well as New Age shows in English. KEST, then called KSOL, was one of the first full time "rhythm and blues" radio stations in the U.S. That station employed disc jockey Sylvester Stewart, later known as Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone recording fame. South Bay (San Francisco Bay Area)
The Santa Clara Valley is a geologic trough in Northern California that extends 90 miles (145 km) south–southeast from San Francisco to Hollister. The longitudinal valley is bordered on the west by the Santa Cruz Mountains and on the east by the Diablo Range; the two coastal ranges meet south of Hollister. The San Francisco Bay borders the valley to the north, and fills much of the northern third of the valley. The valley floor is an alluvial plain that formed in the graben (tectonic depression) between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward and Calaveras faults to the east. Within the valley and surrounding the bay on three sides are the urban communities of San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, and Alameda County, while the narrow southern reaches of the valley extend into rural San Benito County to Hollister.
