Sinfonia Sacra (Panufnik)
''Sinfonia Sacra'' is the third symphony by the Polish composer, Andrzej Panufnik. It was written in 1963 to mark Poland’s millennium of Christianity and Statehood in 1966. Panufnik intended the work as an expression of his religious and patriotic feelings. He based the symphony on the first known hymn in Polish, the Bogurodzica plainchant. It received its world premiere in Monte Carlo in 1964, performed by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Monte Carlo Opera Orchestra conducted by Louis Fremaux. Description The symphony has two parts: "Three Visions" and "Hymn". Both parts are based on the Bogurodzica. This Gregorian chant, Gregorian plainchant was sung on battlefields by Polish knights and in church as a prayer to the Virgin. The Visions and Hymn thus represent the atmosphere of the battlefield and of prayer respectively. Symphony
A symphony is an extended musical composition in Western classical music, most often for orchestra. Although the term has had many meanings from its origins in the ancient Greek era, by the late 18th century the word had taken on the meaning common today: a work usually consisting of multiple distinct sections or movement (music), movements, often four, with the first movement in sonata form. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt
Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt (5 May 190028 May 1973) was a German conductor and composer. After studying at several music academies, he worked in German opera houses between 1923 and 1945, first as a répétiteur and then in increasingly senior conducting posts, ending as Generalmusikdirektor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. After the Second World War, Schmidt-Isserstedt was invited by the occupying British forces to form the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Northwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, of which he was musical director and chief conductor from 1945 to 1971. Konzerthausorchester Berlin
The Konzerthausorchester Berlin is a German symphony orchestra based in Berlin. The orchestra is resident at the Konzerthaus Berlin, designed by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The building was destroyed during World War II, and was rebuilt from 1979 to 1984. History The orchestra was founded in 1952 as the ''Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester'' (Berlin Symphony Orchestra) in what was then East Berlin, as a rival ensemble to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra based in West Berlin. Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra
The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra (Finnish:''Tampere Filharmonia'') is a Finnish orchestra based in Tampere. Founded in 1930, and maintained by the municipality of Tampere since 1947, the orchestra is currently based in the Tampere Hall. The orchestra collaborates with the Tampere Opera and Tampere Ballet and regularly participates in the Tampere Biennale music festival. John Gunnar Rafael Storgårds (born 20 October 1963 in Helsinki) is a Finnish violinist and conductor. Biography Storgårds studied violin with Esther Raitio and Jouko Ignatius at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and continued his violin studies with Chaim Taub in Israel. He was a founding member of the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. After experience leading orchestras from the front desk of the violin section, his interest in conducting increased after an invitation to conduct the Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra. Leopold Stokowski
Leopold Anthony Stokowski (18 April 1882 – 13 September 1977) was a British conductor. One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and his appearance in the Disney film ''Fantasia'' with that orchestra. He was especially noted for his free-hand conducting style that spurned the traditional baton and for obtaining a characteristically sumptuous sound from the orchestras he directed.
