Sinclair Dickson
James Sinclair Dickson (2 March 1884 – 3 January 1961) was an Australian rules footballer for the Port Adelaide Football Club. Football Sinclair Dickson was a member of three Port Adelaide premiership teams in the South Australian Football League. He also won the Port Adelaide best and fairest in consecutive years in 1908 and 1909. Sinclair Dickson was runner up for the 1909 Magarey Medal. Dickson represented South Australia on seven occasions between 1908 and 1910. Sinclair Dickson served as the treasurer of the Port Adelaide Football Club during the 1920s. In 1924 Sinclair Dickson took part in a charity match that pitted retired champions against a league eighteen of mostly current state carnival players with the former side winning. Magarey Medal
The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipient is Aaron Young. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL). The sport at that time was known for often rough play, and Magarey wanted to help combat this, and help gain more respect for umpires. 1908 Melbourne Carnival
The 1908 Melbourne Carnival was the inaugural Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition, held in Melbourne in August 1908. It was known at the time as the Jubilee Australasian Football Carnival because it was designed to commemorate 50 years of Australian rules football. It was the first time in which all Australian states and New Zealand had competed together in the sport. The winning team was presented with a silk pennant; and each member of the winning team received a gold championship medal. Although the 29 August final between Victoria and Western Australia was played in front of something like 15,000 spectators, it is certain that the crowd would have been considerably larger if it had not also been the first day of the American Fleet's eight-day visit to Melbourne. Goolwa is a historic river port on the Murray River near the Murray Mouth in South Australia, and joined by a bridge to Hindmarsh Island.
