The Italian Catholic Diocese of Pistoia ( la, Dioecesis Pistoriensis) is located in the Province of Florence. It has existed since the third century. From 1653 to 1954, the historic diocese was the diocese of Pistoia and Prato. The Diocese of Prato has been separate from 1954. The diocese is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Florence. History The name of Pistoia appears for the first time in history in connection with the conspiracy of Catiline (62 BC), but it was only after the sixth century that it became important; it was governed, first, by its bishops, later by stewards of the Marquis of Tuscany. It was the first to establish its independence, after the death of Countess Matilda, and its municipal statutes were the most ancient of their kind in Italy. Antonio Bagnoli (25 February 1902 – 24 December 1997) was an Italian ordinary of the Catholic Church. He was the Bishop of Volterra and then the Bishop of Fiesole. Biography Antonio Bagnoli was born on 25 February 1902 in Cortenuova, an Italian ''comune'' in the province of Bergamo, in the region of Lombardy. He entered the Catholic priesthood and was ordained a priest on 25 July 1925. On 17 August 1943, Bagnoli was appointed the Bishop of Volterra. He was subsequently consecrated a bishop on 7 October 1943 by Cardinal Elia Dalla Costa as principal consecrator and Bishops Ugo Giubbi and Francesco Niccoli as co-consecrators. On 8 April 1954, Bagnoli was appointed the Bishop of Fiesole, during which time he participated as a council father in all four of sessions of the Second Vatican Council. He is the current president of the John Paul II Foundation for Dialogue, Cooperation and Development. Biography Luciano Giovannetti was born on 26 July 1934 in Civitella in Val di Chiana, a ''comune'' in the Tuscan province of Arezzo. He was ordained a priest on 15 June 1957 in Arezzo and on 15 February 1978 was simultaneously the Auxiliary Bishop of Arezzo and the Titular Bishop of the Diocese of Zaba.
