Simon M. Woods
Simon M. Woods is a British entrepreneur and former record producer. Woods was the manager for the band UB40 after having seen them play at a pub, and turned down two offers on their behalf to release under 2 Tone Records, opting instead to release "Food for Thought (song), Food For Thought" through another label, Graduate, before setting up Dep International that recorded and released UB40 internationally with enormous success. Woods left the band in 1983 and started his own label, to which he signed Swans Way (band), Swans Way. Woods ran his own marketing company before being hired on by the Birmingham School of Acting, and founded the European Drama Network, a film production company which makes movies based on classic plays. UB40
UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success. They have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984 were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group. UB40 have sold over 70 million records worldwide. The ethnic make-up of the band's original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish, and Yemeni parentage. Their hit singles include their debut " Food for Thought" and two ''Billboard'' Hot 100 number ones with " Red Red Wine" and " Can't Help Falling in Love". 2 Tone Records
2 Tone Records was an English independent record label that mostly released ska and reggae-influenced music with a punk rock and pop music overtone. It was founded by Jerry Dammers of the Specials and backed by Chrysalis Records. History Jerry Dammers of the ska revival band the Specials started the record label in 1979. Chrysalis had wanted to sign the Specials, but Dammers arranged a label deal, for Chrysalis to fund 15 singles a year and release at least ten of those. The label spawned the 2 Tone music and cultural movement, which was popular among skinheads, rudies and some mod revivalists. It was released as a double A-side in early 1980 and reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and number one in New Zealand. Swans Way (band)
Swans Way were a three-piece English pop group. In addition to the future Scarlet Fantastic duo of Maggie De Monde (vocals and percussion) and Rick P. Jones (double bass), Swans Way featured the vocals of Robert Shaw. Formed in Birmingham in 1982, Swans Way presented a mixture of musical influences, from jazz to classical and pop to disco. Their first single, "Theme from the Balcony" issued in 1982, was not a chart hit, but their second, "Soul Train", reached number 20 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1984. They also released further singles, with varying success. "The Anchor", in March 1984, did not chart, whilst "Illuminations" made number 57 in May 1984, and their third and final hit, "When The Wild Calls", peaked outside the Top 75 (the officially-published chart listing) at number 80. Birmingham School Of Acting
Birmingham School of Acting (BSA), previously known as Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art (BSSTDA) and then as Birmingham School of Speech and Drama (BSSD) was a drama school located in Birmingham, England. It was founded in 1936 by Pamela Chapman and became a faculty of Birmingham City University in 2005. In September 2006, it moved from Paradise Place to a purpose-built facility at Millennium Point in the city's Eastside area. In 2008, it became a school of the university's Faculty of Performance, Media and English (PME), and in September 2017 it merged to become part of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The Mandrake Root
''The Mandrake Root'' is a 2008 comedy drama film adapted and directed by Malachi Bogdanov as his first feature film. The film was produced by Simon M. Woods as the first film release of European Drama Network. Based on the play ''La Mandragola'' (''The Mandrake'') written by Niccolò Machiavelli in 1518, the film was nominated for the Best Drama 2008 by the Royal Television Society Awards Midland. Production ''The Mandrake Root'' was shot in 14 days in Sassari, on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The movie crew was from both the UK and Italy, with lead cast from the UK. While the original play ''La Mandragola'' was set in Florence, Italy in 1504, the film relocates the story to Sassari in Sardinia, Italy, in a similar period. Malachi Bogdanov
Malachi Bogdanov is a theatre director. He was Associate Director of the English Shakespeare Company (1997–2000), and directed international tours of productions including A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Threepenny Opera, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Titus Andronicus and an award-winning production of Richard the Third (UK and Australian Tour – Herald Angel for best production at the Edinburgh Festival). Currently a freelance artist he has directed over 70 professional shows and works all over the world. In 2003 he wrote and directed Bill Shakespeare's Italian Job at the Edinburgh Festival and was the subject of a BBC documentary. In 2004 it also toured to the Neuss International Shakespeare Festival in Germany as well as returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Odyssey
