Simon (given Name)
Simon is a common name, from Hebrew שִׁמְעוֹן '' Šimʻôn'', meaning "listen" or "hearing". It is also a classical Greek name, deriving from an adjective meaning "flat-nosed". In the first century AD, Simon was the most popular male name for Jews in Roman Judea. The Hebrew name is Hellenised as ''Symeon'' ( grc-gre, Συμεών) in the Septuagint, and in the New Testament as both Symeon in Strong's Concordance and, according to most authorities, Simon. Some commentators on the New Testament say that it could be a Hellenised form of the Hebrew ''Shim'on'', but if not then it indicates that Peter came from a " Hellenistic background"; this was not unheard of in this era, as contemporary Jews such as Andrew the Apostle (Simon's brother) sometimes bore originally Greek names. ''Simon'' is one Latinised version of the name, the others being ''Simeon'' or ''Symeon''. This practice carried over into English: in the King James Version, the name Simeon Niger is spelt ''Simeon'' ... Simon (cat)
Simon (c. 1947 – 28 November 1949) was a ship's cat who served on the Royal Navy sloop-of-war HMS ''Amethyst''. In 1949, during the Yangtze Incident, he received the PDSA's Dickin Medal after surviving injuries from a cannon shell, raising morale, and killing off a rat infestation during his service. Origin Simon was found wandering the dockyards of Hong Kong in March 1948 by 17-year-old Ordinary seaman George Hickinbottom, a member of the crew of the British frigate HMS ''Amethyst'' stationed in the city in the late 1940s. At this stage, it is thought Simon was approximately a year old, and was very undernourished and unwell. Hickinbottom smuggled the cat aboard ship, and Simon soon ingratiated himself with the crew and officers, particularly because he was adept at catching and killing rats on the lower decks. Simon rapidly gained a reputation for cheekiness, leaving presents of dead rats in sailors' beds, and sleeping in the captain's cap. The crew viewed Simon as a ... SIMON Breach Grenade
The SIMON is an Israeli bullet-trap rifle grenade designed to breach through doors, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. It is intended for use with 5.56 mm rifles such as the M4 carbine. Overview The system consists of a bullet-trap tail section which slides over the muzzle of the rifle, an explosive midsection and a front standoff rod. The grenade is propelled by a normal ball or tracer round to a maximum range of thirty meters and is detonated by the impact of the standoff rod against the door to be breached, the standoff distance allowing the blast wave to affect as much of the door surface as possible, negating any need to aim for hinges or locks. A version which is manually attached to the door is also available, known as "static SIMON". Specifications * Weight: 640 g (including standoff rod) * Length: ** Standoff rod: 400 mm ** Overall: 730 mm * Warhead diameter: 100 mm * Explosive fill: ** SIMON 150: 150 g ** SIMON 120: 120 g * Range: 15 ... IBM Simon
The IBM Simon Personal Communicator (simply known as IBM Simon) is a handheld, touchscreen PDA designed by International Business Machines (IBM), and manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric. Although the term "smartphone" was not coined until 1995, because of Simon's features and capabilities, it has been retrospectively referred to as the first true smartphone. BellSouth Cellular Corp. distributed the IBM Simon in the United States between August 1994 and February 1995, selling 50,000 units. The Simon Personal Communicator was the first personal digital assistant or PDA to include telephony features (make phone calls). The battery lasted only an hour, and flip phones became increasingly slim which led to its demise. History With advances in MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, or MOS transistor) technology enabling smaller integrated circuit chips and the proliferation of wireless mobile networks, IBM engineer Frank Canova realised that chip-and-wirel ... Simon (computer)
Simon was a relay-based computer, described by Edmund Berkeley in a series of thirteen construction articles in ''Radio-Electronics'' magazine, from October 1950. Intended for the educational purpose of demonstrating the concept of digital computer, it could not be used for any significant practical computation since it had only two bits of memory. In 1950, it sold for US$600. Some have described it as the "first personal computer", at ''Blinkenlights Archaeological Institute''. Accessed: March 15, 2008. although its extremely limited capacity and its unsuitability for use for any purpose other than as an educational demonstration make that classification questionable. History The "Simon project" arose as a result of the Berkeley's book ''Giant Brains, or Machines That Think' ...[...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Simon (cipher)
Simon is a family of lightweight block ciphers publicly released by the National Security Agency (NSA) in June 2013. Simon has been optimized for performance in hardware implementations, while its sister algorithm, Speck, has been optimized for software implementations. The NSA began working on the Simon and Speck ciphers in 2011. The agency anticipated some agencies in the US federal government would need a cipher that would operate well on a diverse collection of Internet of Things devices while maintaining an acceptable level of security. Description of the cipher The Simon block cipher is a balanced Feistel cipher with an ''n''-bit word, and therefore the block length is 2''n''. The key length is a multiple of ''n'' by 2, 3, or 4, which is the value ''m''. Therefore, a Simon cipher implementation is denoted as Simon2''n''/''nm''. For example, Simon64/128 refers to the cipher operating on a 64-bit plaintext block (''n'' = 32) that uses a 128-bit key. The block ...
