Silver Lion
The Silver Lion ( it, Leone d'argento, also known as Silver Lion for Best Direction) is an annual award presented for best directing achievements in a feature film at official competition section of the Venice Film Festival since 1998. The prize has been awarded irregularly and has gone through several changes of purpose. Between 1953 and 1994, the award was given infrequently to a number of films as second prize for those nominated for the Golden Lion. At various times, the Silver Lion has also been awarded for debut films, short films, and direction. 61st Venice International Film Festival
The 61st annual Venice International Film Festival was held between 1 and 11 September 2004. The festival opened with Steven Spielberg's ''The Terminal'', and closed with Katsuhiro Otomo's '' Steamboy''. The Golden Lion was awarded to the film ''Vera Drake'', directed by Mike Leigh. On this edition of the festival, a new independent section, Venice Days (''Giornate degli autori''), has started "for free cinema, new talents and new stories". The Last Circus
''The Last Circus'' ( es, Balada triste de trompeta, links=no; ) is a 2010 Spanish-French dark comedy-drama film written and directed by Álex de la Iglesia, which stars Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre and Carolina Bang. It premiered at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Plot In 1937, Republican Militia force a circus troupe to fight on their side in the Spanish Civil War. The Funny Clown (Santiago Segura) slaughters dozens of Nationalist troops, armed only with a machete, before being shot and disarmed. While his fellow troupe members are executed, the Funny Clown is sentenced to work as a slave laborer, at the monument of the Valle de los Caídos. Women Without Men (2009 Film)
''Women Without Men'' is a 2009 film adaptation of the 1990 Shahrnush Parsipur novel, directed by Shirin Neshat. Neshat's work explores gender issues in the Islamic world. ''Women without Men'' is her first dramatic feature. The film profiles the lives of four women living in Tehran in 1953, during the American-backed coup that returned the Shah of Iran to power. The film was called "visually transfixing" by ''The New York Times'' reviewer Stephen Holden, who added, "the film surpasses even Michael Haneke's '' The White Ribbon'' in the fierce beauty and precision of its cinematography (by Martin Gschlacht)." Plot The film tells about the doctor Daniil Pokrovsky, who is preparing the squad of the first cosmonauts for spacewalk. ''Private Fears in Public Places'' (french: Cœurs ("Hearts"), is a 2006 French comedy-drama film directed by Alain Resnais. It was adapted from Alan Ayckbourn's 2004 play ''Private Fears in Public Places''. The film won several awards, including a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
