Luca Signorelli
Luca Signorelli ( – 16 October 1523) was an Italian Renaissance painter from Cortona in Tuscany, who was noted in particular for his ability as a draftsman and his use of foreshortening. His massive frescos of the ''Last Judgment'' (1499–1503) in Orvieto Cathedral are considered his masterpiece. In his early 40s he returned to live in Cortona, after working in Florence, Siena and Rome (1478–84, painting a now lost section of the Sistine Chapel). With an established reputation, he remained based in Cortona for the rest of his life, but often travelled to the cities of the region to fulfill commissions. He was probably trained by Piero della Francesca in Florence, as his cousin Giorgio Vasari wrote, and his Quattrocento style became rather out of date in the new century. Cortona will host a major exhibition in 2023 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death. Paolo Signorelli (14 March 1934 – 1 December 2010) was an Italian author, activist, and politician of the extreme right. Early life and education Signorelli was born in Rome on 14 March 1934. His mother was from Ciociaria. His father, born in Viterbo, had served in World War I, getting seriously injured in the 1916 battle at Isonzo and coming home as an invalid. Signorelli finished high school at the ''Liceo Augusto'' in Rome and went on to graduate from the Sapienza University of Rome with a Ph.D. in Political Science. His thesis was about revolutionary syndicalism. Activism Signorelli became politically active from a young age, already sympathetic to the cause and the veterans of the Italian Social Republic, and started getting into brawls with leftist fellow students. Maria Signorelli (Rome, 17 November 1908 – Rome, 9 July 1992) was an Italian puppet master known for her creations as well as for her sets and costume designs, and valuable collection of puppets. Biography Maria Signorelli was the first of three daughters born to the radiologist and art collector Angelo Signorelli (1876-1952) and Olga Resnevič (1883-1973), a Latvian physician and writer, translator of Fydor Dostoevsky, and writer of the first biography about Italian actor Eleonora Duse. Maria grew up in a stimulating family environment, in close contact with the artists and patrons of theater and literature who often frequented the family home in Rome. Signorelli's father made a habit of helping young artists, taking care of them for free and purchasing or subsidizing their works. Frank Signorelli (May 24, 1901 – December 9, 1975) was an American jazz pianist. Biography Signorelli was born to an Italian Sicilian family in New York City, New York. Signorelli was a founding member of the Original Memphis Five in 1917, then joined the Original Dixieland Jazz Band briefly in 1921. In 1927, he played in Adrian Rollini's New York ensemble, and subsequently worked with Eddie Lang, Bix Beiderbecke, Matty Malneck and Paul Whiteman. In 1935 he was part of Dick Stabile's All-America "Swing" Band. In 1936-38, he played in the revived version of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. He recorded with Phil Napoleon in 1946 and with Miff Mole in 1958. Pietro Napoli Signorelli (28 September 1731 – 1 April 1815) was an Italian scholar of classic literature, mainly drama, and historian. Biography He was born in Naples to a father who was a notary, and initially trained as a lawyer, including under Antonio Genovesi. But in 1765, he traveled to Madrid, Spain. In Spain, where he joined a circle of writers (tertulia literaria) interested in writing dramas. In Spain, he wrote two of his most successful works: "Critique and history of antique and modern theater" and "Events of the Culture of the Two Sicilies".
