Signal-to-noise Ratio
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) is a measure used in science and engineering that compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise. SNR is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power, often expressed in decibels. A ratio higher than 1:1 (greater than 0 dB) indicates more signal than noise. SNR, bandwidth, and channel capacity of a communication channel are connected by the Shannon–Hartley theorem. Definition Signal-to-noise ratio is defined as the ratio of the power of a signal (meaningful input) to the power of background noise (meaningless or unwanted input): : \mathrm = \frac, where is average power. Both signal and noise power must be measured at the same or equivalent points in a system, and within the same system bandwidth. Depending on whether the signal is a constant () or a random variable (), the signal-to-noise ratio for random noise becomes: : \mathrm = \frac where E refers to the expected value, i.e. in this case ...

Signal-to-noise Ratio (imaging)
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is used in imaging to characterize image quality. The sensitivity of a (digital or film) imaging system is typically described in the terms of the signal level that yields a threshold level of SNR. Industry standards define sensitivity in terms of the ISO film speed equivalent, using SNR thresholds (at average scene luminance) of 40:1 for "excellent" image quality and 10:1 for "acceptable" image quality. SNR is sometimes quantified in decibels (dB) of signal power relative to noise power, though in the imaging field the concept of "power" is sometimes taken to be the power of a voltage signal proportional to optical power; so a 20 dB SNR may mean either 10:1 or 100:1 optical power, depending on which definition is in use. Definition of SNR Traditionally, SNR is defined to be the ratio of the average signal value \mu_\mathrm to the standard deviation of the signal \sigma_\mathrm: : \mathrm = \frac when the signal is an optical intensity, or ...

Signal To Noise (comics)
''Signal to Noise'' () is a graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean. It was originally serialised in the UK style magazine ''The Face (magazine), The Face'', beginning in 1989, and collected as a graphic novel in 1992, published by Victor Gollancz Ltd in the UK and by Dark Horse Comics in the US. The story follows a film-maker who suffers from a terminal illness, and imagines a last film which he will never have time to make. It examines the relationship between Apocalypse, apocalyptic imagery, and the central character's personal disaster. There have been three adaptations of the graphic novel into other media: * in 1996, Gaiman adapted his own story for a BBC radio broadcast, with music by McKean; * in 1999, a stage adaptation written by Marc Rosenbush and Robert Toombs was mounted in Chicago with Gaiman's cooperation. * in 2002, McKean adapted it into a 14-minute film, with Heathcote Williams as the director. Eric S
The given name Eric, Erich, Erikk, Erik, Erick, or Eirik is derived from the Old Norse name ''Eiríkr'' (or ''Eríkr'' in Old East Norse due to monophthongization). The first element, ''ei-'' may be derived from the older Proto-Norse language, Proto-Norse ''*wikt:Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/ainaz, aina(z)'', meaning "one, alone, unique", ''as in the form'' ''Æ∆inrikr'' explicitly, but it could also be from ''*wikt:Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/aiwaz, aiwa(z)'' "everlasting, eternity", as in the Gothic form ''Euric''. The second element ''-wikt:ríkr, ríkr'' stems either from Proto-Germanic language, Proto-Germanic ''*wikt:Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/rīks, ríks'' "king, ruler" (cf. Gothic ''wikt:𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃, reiks'') or the therefrom derived ''*wikt:Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/rīkijaz, ríkijaz'' "kingly, powerful, rich, prince"; from the common Proto-Indo-European language, Proto-Indo-European root *wikt:Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/h₃rḗǵs, h ...

Signal To Noise (Sinclair Novel)
''Signal to Noise'' () is a 1997 cyberpunk novel by Carla Sinclair published by Harper. This is the author's first novel; she had previously written non-fiction works. - Posted online on May 20, 2010. It is set in San Francisco. Tiffany Lee Brown, writing in ''Wired'' magazine, stated that the "cybercultural parody" reflects "distinctive perspective on the foibles of the wired life" and "caricatures" people in the San Francisco technology environment. According to the author she took seven months to create the initial draft before selling it to the publisher, which asked for a substantial rewrite within a two-month period; the publishers stated a dislike of the, in Sinclair's words, "too clichéd" criminal characters. Sinclair stated that the rewrite affected about 66% of the book. She did the rewrite during a pregnancy. Sinclair stated that she included elements she noticed in real life and that she "enjoyed" writing scenes portraying violence, citing an increase in adrenaline, rat ...

Signal To Noise (The Rise Album)
''Signal to Noise'' is the first full-length album by The Rise, released in 2002. The album combines electronic beats with post-hardcore music, much like Refused did with their 1998 album, the prophetically titled, ''The Shape of Punk to Come''. It was re-released in 2005 on ReIgnition Recordings. Critical reception ''Stylus Magazine'' wrote that "it’s extremely refreshing to see a heavy band that actually cares a little bit about their dynamics and sound textures as opposed to just wanting to hit the listener over the head with E chords." ''The Austin Chronicle'' called the album "stellar," and likened it to "Atari Teenage Riot with real songs." ''CMJ New Music Report CMJ Holdings Corp. is a music events and online media company, originally founded in 1978, which ran a website, hosted an annual festival in New York City, and published two magazines, ''CMJ New Music Monthly'' and ''CMJ New Music Report''. Up (Peter Gabriel Album)
''Up'' (2002) is the seventh studio and 13th album overall released by the English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It is his most recent full-length studio album of new original material to date, as the subsequent albums ''Scratch My Back'' and '' New Blood'' feature covers of other artists' songs, and orchestral renderings of Gabriel's older material, respectively. Background Gabriel started work on the album in the spring of 1995. He and engineer Richard Chappell travelled between different locations during the initial writing stages of the album using a portable setup (recording at Real World Studios in between): the first two months were spent in a rented chalet in Méribel, then three months in Senegal starting in October 1995, followed by another trip to Méribel in Spring 1996 and a brief recording stint on a friend's recording-studio-equipped boat along the Amazon in Summer 1997. From then on, the rest of the album work was based at Real World Studios, where further writing ...

Cut Here
"Cut Here" is a song by English rock band The Cure, released as a single in October 2001 from their best-of compilation ''Greatest Hits'' released the same year. Content Cure frontman Robert Smith wrote the song in memory of his friend Billy Mackenzie, the lead singer of the new wave band Associates, who committed suicide in 1997. The title of the song does not relate directly to the lyrical content; it is an anagram of "The Cure". Regarding its musical style, AllMusic wrote that the song "rises with early sounds of Madchester". Release The track was released as a single from the band's 2001 ''Greatest Hits'' compilation, reaching number 54 on the UK Singles Chart. It is the band's last release for record label Fiction. The song was re-recorded later in 2001 for the band's ''Acoustic Hits'' release, which contains eighteen re-recordings of previous songs by the band using acoustic guitars and was only released as a limited edition bonus disc to said greatest hits album. ...
