Radial Engine
The radial engine is a reciprocating type internal combustion engine configuration in which the cylinders "radiate" outward from a central crankcase like the spokes of a wheel. It resembles a stylized star when viewed from the front, and is called a "star engine" in some other languages. The radial configuration was commonly used for aircraft engines before gas turbine engines became predominant. Siemens & Halske AG (or Siemens-Halske) was a German electrical engineering company that later became part of Siemens. It was founded on 12 October 1847 as ''Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske'' by Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske. The company, located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, specialised in manufacturing electrical telegraphs according to Charles Wheatstone's patent of 1837. In 1848, the company constructed one of the first European telegraph lines from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main. Siemens & Halske was not alone in the realm of electrical engineering. The LFG V 40 and V 44 were one-off, single-engine, two-seat sports monoplanes, identical apart from their engines, built in Germany in 1925. Design and development The V 40 and V 44 were all-metal monoplanes#Types of monoplane, high-wing monoplanes, with thick, straight-edged, cantilever wings. The BFW M.21 was a single-engined biplane trainer designed by Willy Messerschmitt for the German Ministry of Transport. It was one of only two biplanes Messerschmitt designed, neither reaching production. Design and development During 1927, following the success of his M 18 airliner tried to gain funding from the Baverian government; because the latter were already subsiding BFW (Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke) they pressed for an arrangement whereby Willy Messerschmitt joined BFW on the understanding the company produced only his designs. The BFW M.26 was a single-engined cantilever-winged monoplane light airliner built in Germany in 1930. There were no sales and only one was built. Design and development The BFW M.26 was a light civil aircraft, designed to carry two to three passengers in an enclosed cabin. The pilot's position was also enclosed. It was a high cantilever-winged monoplane in the style of Messerschmitt's earlier three-cabin aircraft, the successful BFW M.18 and BFW M.20, and the commercially unsuccessful BFW M.24, though smaller than any of them.
