Siegfried Rosengart
Siegfried Rosengart (1894 – 1985) was a German-Swiss art dealer. Early life Rosengart was born in 1894. His parents were Heinrich Rosengart (1850–1921), a bed feather maker, and Selma Thannhauser. His uncles, Joseph Rosengart and Heinrich Thannhauser, were both involved in art. In 1912 Rosengart was influenced by a visit to the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne in 1912, which featured modern art. He met Picasso while studying French in Paris in 1913–14. In 1919, Rosengart joined his uncle Heinrich Thannhauser's gallery. Rosengart opened a branch for Thannhauser in Lucerne in 1920, managing it until 1937. In 1933 he received Swiss citizenship. Art dealing and collecting Rosengart's daughter, Angela, joined him in running the gallery in 1948, becoming a partner in 1957. Heinrich Thannhauser
Heinrich Thannhauser (born February 16, 1859 in Hürben, today a district of Krumbach (Swabia); died 1934 on the German-Swiss border) was a German gallery owner and art collector. As an art dealer, he was one of the most important promoters of early Expressionist art in Germany. Life The Jewish Thannhauser family came from Mönchsdeggingen. Heinrich Thannhauser first learned the profession of a tailor. He founded his Munich Modern Gallery (Moderne Galerie)in 1904. At first he exhibited the artworks of French Impressionists such as Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin. Later works by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque were added. In 1909, Thannhauser separated from his partner Franz Josef Brakl and continued to run the gallery under the name Galerie Thannhauser. The "Sonderbund" — as it is normally called; its complete name being Sonderbund westdeutscher Kunstfreunde und Künstler (the "Separate League of West German Art Lovers and Artists"), and also known as Sonderbund group — was a "special union" of artists and art lovers, established 1909 in Düsseldorf and dissolved in 1916. In its first years, the Sonderbund mounted some landmark exhibitions, successfully introducing French Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern Art to the western parts of Germany. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is the art collection of the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, in Düsseldorf. United by this institution are three different exhibition venues: the ''K20'' at Grabbeplatz, the ''K21'' in the Ständehaus, and the ''Schmela Haus''. The Kunstsammlung was founded in 1961 by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia as a foundation under private law for the purpose of displaying the art collection and expanding it through new acquisitions. During its 50-year history, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen has earned an international reputation as a museum for the art of the 20th century. Paul Klee (; 18 December 1879 – 29 June 1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Bernhard Mayer
Bernhard Mayer (July 22, 1866 – July 18, 1946) was a German fur trader, anarchist, patron and art collector. He laid the foundation for the Merzbacher Collection which is currently housed at Kunsthaus Zürich. Early life and education Bernhard Mayer came from a Jewish family from the Hunsrück region. His father ran a grocery store, his mother was a housewife. At the age of eleven, he left his parents to attend school in Bad Kreuznach. He broke off his education and worked first in Simmern, then Saarbrücken, Saargemünd and finally in 1885 in Aachen. He completed an apprenticeship as furrier in Brussels, Belgium. Curt Valentin
Curt Valentin (5 October 1902, Hamburg, Germany – 19 August 1954, Forte dei Marmi, Italy) was a German-Jewish art dealer known for handling modern art, particularly sculpture, and works classified as "degenerate" and stolen from European museums by the Nazi regime in Germany. After 1927 Curt Valentin worked for Alfred Flechtheim in Berlin. In 1934, he worked at Karl Buchholz Gallery, Hamburg. In 1937, he emigrated to America, and opened a modern art gallery, Bucholz gallery, in New York City. He had permission to sell German art in America, from the Nazi authorities to help fund Hitler's war efforts. On June 30, 1939, Curt Valentin bid for art looted by the Nazis that was being auctioned at the Fischer Gallery in Lucerne on behalf of Alfred Barr who provided money donated to the Museum of Modern Art. Thomas E. Ammann (1950 – 9 June 1993) was a leading Swiss art dealer in Impressionist and twentieth century art, and a collector of post-war and contemporary art. Life Born 1950 in Ermatingen, Switzerland, as the youngest of four children (Eveline, Doris, Susan), Ammann became an art collector while still a teenager. Aged 18 he went to work at Galerie Bruno Bischofberger in Zurich.
