Siegfried Adolf Wouthuysen
Siegfried Adolf Wouthuysen (17 August 1916 – 14 July 1996) was a Dutch physicist who made contributions to quantum mechanics. Early life Wouthuysen was born in Amsterdam in 1916. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Chemistry at Ghent University in 1936 and his master's degree in Mathematics and Physics at Leiden University in 1939. Research Wouthuysen gained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, 1948 with a dissertation on ''self-energy and relativistic covariance in field theory'', under his advisor J. Robert Oppenheimer. In 1949 he became assistant professor and in 1955 full professor of Physics at the University of Amsterdam, which position he held until his retirement in 1984. He collaborated with Leslie Lawrence Foldy to develop the Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation, and with George B. Foldy–Wouthuysen Transformation
The Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation was historically significant and was formulated by Leslie Lawrance Foldy and Siegfried Adolf Wouthuysen in 1949 to understand the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation, the equation for spin-½ particles. A detailed general discussion of the Foldy–Wouthuysen-type transformations in particle interpretation of relativistic wave equations is in Acharya and Sudarshan (1960). Its utility in high energy physics is now limited due to the primary applications being in the ultra-relativistic domain where the Dirac field is treated as a quantised field. Wouthuysen–Field Coupling
Wouthuysen–Field coupling, or the Wouthuysen–Field effect, is a mechanism that couples the excitation temperature, also called the spin temperature, of neutral hydrogen to Lyman-alpha radiation. This coupling plays a role in producing a difference in the temperature of neutral hydrogen and the cosmic microwave background at the end of the Dark Ages and the beginning of the epoch of reionization. Leslie Lawrence Foldy
Leslie Lawrance Foldy (1919–2001) was a theoretical physicist, who made contributions to condensed matter physics and quantum mechanics. Early life Foldy was born in Sabinov, Czechoslovakia, on October 26, 1919. His parents were of Hungarian origin, and named their son László Földi. In 1920, the family moved to the USA due to the invasions of Czechoslovakia by Hungary around that time, and there he was known as Leslie Foldy. Education His high school education was in Cleveland, Ohio, and at that time he called his middle name "Lawrance", upon noticing he hadn't a middle name while the other students had. While at high school, he picked up an interest in physics.
