The siege of Jinju was one of two battles during the Japanese invasions of Korea – the first in 1592, and the second in 1593. The first siege attempt by the Japanese failed, leaving the Koreans holding the castle. The second siege of Jinju was successful, and it fell to the Japanese. Jeong Gi-ryong
Jeong Ki-ryong (1562–1622) was a prominent Korean Army general during the Joseon Dynasty. He fought against the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598) (Seven Years' War), and won the battles of Geochang and Geumsan. He was one of those who recaptured the Sangju castle, captured the Japancese general in Goryeong, and recaptured Seongju, Hapcheon, Uiryeong, Kyungju and Ulsan. Jeong Ki-ryong was born in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province in 1562. His original name was Jeong Mu-su (정무수; 鄭茂壽). He was the son of Jeong Ho, Fourth State Councillor (''Jwachanseong'' 좌찬성). In 1586, he passed the military examination (무과; 武科) and renamed Ki-ryong by the King's command. In 1590, he got to serve as a drill instructor under the Shin Rip, Commander of the Right Gyeongsangdo. Kim Seong-il
Kim Seong-il (; 1538–1593) was a Joseon dynasty politician and ambassador. He was a member of the Eastern faction in the Joseon court. He served as envoy to Japan in a Tongsinsa, along with Ho Song and Hwang Yun-gil in 1590, and met with the Japanese regent, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He died of disease during the Imjin War. Mission to Japan In 1588, the Taiko of Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, dispatched the Daimyo Sō Yoshitoshi on a diplomatic mission to the Joseon court. So carried a letter informing the Korean king, Seonjo, of Hideyoshi's intention to invade Ming China, and to march his armies through Korea on the way. The Joseon officials decided to bring Japan into the Chinese tributary system by establishing diplomatic relations. Kim Sŏng-il was selected as vice-ambassador, along with Ambassador Hwang Yun-gil, from the Western faction, and fellow Easterner Ho Song as recording secretary.
