Siege Of Menagh Air Base
The siege of Menagh Air Base (also spelled ''Menegh'', ''Mannagh'', or ''Minakh'') was an armed confrontation between the Free Syrian Army and aligned Islamist rebel groups on one hand, and the Syrian Armed Forces on the other. Background After months of conflict and failure on the part of the rebels to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's government, some rebels began to switch tactics to targeting government-held military bases. The Menagh Air Base had been a crucial military base used by Syrian military aircraft to bomb rebel forces in the north of the country, particularly in Aleppo city. Siege 2012 The first major rebel assault against the base came in the weeks following the start of the Battle of Aleppo. Abu Usamah Al-Maghrebi
Abdulaziz al-Mahdali (born 1986, Fnideq, Morocco), known as Abu Usamah al-Maghrebi, was a senior military commander of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. History He was one of the first to join Jabhat al-Nusra, at that time operating in Syria as a front group for the Islamic State of Iraq. When the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was declared by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, he remained loyal to IS, despite being offered the position of overall military commander in Jabhat al-Nusra. He led many successful battles against the Syrian government including that against Sheikh Suleiman base, or Base 111, in western Aleppo. He commanded the capture of Menagh Military Airbase as part of the Siege of Menagh Air Base along with nearby villages. The 17th Reserve Division is a formation of the Syrian Army responsible for north-eastern Syria. It is one of two autonomous reserve divisions of the Syrian Arab Army, the other being the 18th Armoured Division. The Northern Storm Brigade ( ar, لواء عاصفة الشمال, ''Liwā’ ’Āṣifat ash-Shamāl''), also known as the Northern Hurricane Brigade is a Syrian rebel group formed in 2011 and based in Azaz in northwestern Syria, near the border with Turkey. Its leader and other members of the group were smugglers from the city and its surrounding before the Syrian Civil War. The group retained exclusive control of the Bab al-Salam border crossing.
