Sid Silk
Sidney Edward Silk (17 April 1921 – 26 June 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1940s. Silk was recruited locally and made his debut in the 1941 Preliminary Final victory over Carlton at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but could not hold his place for the Grand Final. Silk did however play in Essendon's 1942 premiership team, as the 19th man. Chelsea, Victoria
Chelsea is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 30 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Kingston local government area. Chelsea recorded a population of 8,347 at the . Chelsea is located on Port Phillip and is the most important bayside suburban centre between Mordialloc and Frankston. Chelsea is very popular with beachgoers during summer. Also popular is Bicentennial Park, located about 1 km inland on the site of a former rubbish tip. It has recently been redeveloped with modern barbecue and play equipment, most notably the Mount Chelsea adventure playground. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). Brunswick Football Club
Brunswick Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1897 until 1991. Based in Brunswick, Victoria, for most of their time in the Association they were known as the Magpies, and wore black and white guernseys. In its final two seasons in the VFA, it was known as Brunswick-Broadmeadows. History Brunswick Football Club was formed in 1865 and joined the VFA in the 1897 season. The club was colloquially known in its early days as the ''Pottery Workers'' or the ''Brickfielders'', and its fans were known for sounding clayhole bells at matches; after changing their colours from light blue and red colors to black and white, they became informally, and then later formally, known as the Magpies. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). 1942 VFL Season
The 1942 VFL season was the 46th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. Played during the peak of World War II, only eleven of the league's twelve clubs competed, with withdrawing due to travel restrictions. The season ran from 9 May until 19 September, and comprised a home-and-away season in which each club played either 14 or 15 games, followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the seventh time, after it defeated by 53 points in the 1942 VFL Grand Final. The 1941 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 27 September 1941. It was the 43rd annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1940 VFL season. The match, attended by 79,687 spectators, was won by Melbourne by a margin of 29 points, marking that club's fifth premiership victory. By claiming their third successive premiership, Melbourne joined Carlton and Collingwood as the only clubs to achieve the feat. Melbourne's team was understrength as they had been depleted by the war.
