Sid Mark
Sidney Mark Fliegelman (May 30, 1933 – April 18, 2022), known professionally as Sid Mark, was an American radio disc jockey based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mark was best known for hosting a weekly syndicated radio program featuring the music of singer Frank Sinatra, including commentary, interviews, trivia facts and other information to add color and context. Early life Mark was born on May 30, 1933, in Philadelphia. served two years in the United States Army, serving as an infantryman during the Korean War, and afterwards began hosting a live broadcast of a Saturday Jazz show at the Red Hill Inn in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Broadcast Pioneers Of Philadelphia
The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia is a state-chartered, federally recognized, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, devoted to collecting information about and promoting cultural work related to broadcasting and communications in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US, and its metropolitan area, the Delaware Valley. The group was founded in 1962 as a local chapter of the national Broadcast Pioneers organization, but became an independent organization in 1995. The organization is made up of over 500 members of the broadcast community. Full members must have 10 years or more experience in the business while associate members need less. Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia is more often simply referred to as just Broadcast Pioneers. WHAT (1340 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The station is owned by VM Broadcasting. History Founded as WHAT (1922–1944) On October 17, 1922, a new Philadelphia radio station was authorized by the government to the Lennig Brothers Co, a radio supply company headed up by Frederick Lennig at 827 Spring Garden Street. Ownership of the station changed twice within a two-year span. In 1939, the Bonwit Teller department store replaced The Evening Ledger newspaper as owner; in July 1940, J. David Stern, who published The Philadelphia Record newspaper bought the station from Bonwit Teller. At that time, WHAT operated with 100 watts of power. The company takes its name from an earlier network also named Westwood One, a company founded in 1978. The company was, at various times, managed by CBS Radio, the radio arm of CBS Corporation and Viacom.
