Sibyl Pool
Sibyl Murphree Pool (1901–1973) was a politician from Alabama. She was first appointed as the Secretary of State of Alabama in 1944 following the resignation of David Howell Turner. In 1950, she was elected Alabama State Treasurer and served until 1955. Pool was born in 1901 in York, Alabama. She graduated from Alabama State College for Women, now known as the University of Montevallo. She then went on to attend the Livingston State Teacher's College. In 1936, she was elected to fill in a two-year vacancy in the Alabama House of Representatives. In 1944, Governor Chauncey Sparks appointed Pool to serve as Secretary of State. In 1946, she became the first woman elected to statewide office in Alabama as Secretary of State. She ran for treasurer in 1950 and carried 65 of 67 of Alabama's counties. Alabama State Treasurer
The Alabama State Treasurer acts as the head banker for the State of Alabama, handling deposits, withdrawals, redemptions of state warrants and investments of state funds. The position was created in 1819 when Alabama became a state. Its constitution established the Office of the Treasurer of State, a position that would be elected by the legislature. Individuals serving as state treasurer were elected annually by the General Assembly from 1819 to 1861. Beginning in 1861, the treasurer was elected biennially from until 1868 and was elected by popular vote for a term of two years in 1868. Arthur Bingham's election in 1868 marked the first time a Republican would hold the office. Kay Ivey in 2002 would become the second Republican to hold the office. Alabama Public Service Commission
The Alabama Public Service Commission, commonly called the PSC, was established by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1915 to primarily replace the State Railroad Commission. The PSC's responsibility was expanded in 1920 to include regulating and setting rates that utility companies charge their customers for electricity. The legislature expanded the PSC's responsibilities in later years to include those companies that provide gas, water, and communications, as well as transportation common carriers such as trucking and air carriers. The PSC effectively determines the rate of profits that most of these companies are allowed to earn. However, some of its traditional responsibilities have passed to the federal government with the passage of the Federal Aviation Act of 1994 and the Federal Communications Act of 1996. Gordon Persons
Seth Gordon Persons (February 5, 1902 – May 29, 1965) was an American Democratic politician who was the 43rd Governor of Alabama from 1951 to 1955. He was born and died in Montgomery, Alabama. The Dauphin Island Bridge south of Mobile is formally named for him. The Gordon Persons Building is a six floor, 60,000 square foot state government office building in Montgomery. Persons studied electrical engineering in college, leading to a very successful business running electrical lines in rural Alabama (benefiting from Rural Electrification Administration contracts); in addition to financial gain, he also won considerable popularity. When running for office in 1950, Persons gained notoriety by touring the state in a helicopter (prompting one opponent to dub him "the man from Mars").
