Siasconset Golf Club
Siasconset Golf Club, also known as the Siasconset Golf Course and commonly shortened to the Sconset Golf Course, is one of the easternmost golf courses in Massachusetts, perched on the edge of Nantucket Island in Siasconset, Massachusetts. This is the oldest golf course still active on Nantucket and one of the oldest golf courses in America. It once was considered the oldest privately owned golf course in the country still open to the public but, as of May 1, 2012, it is no longer privately owned. It is still known by island locals as "Skinner's Golf Club", or "Skinner's", because Robert "Skinner" Coffin was a co-owner and the superintendent of the course for many years and use to host a recreational golf tournament, known as "The Skinner Open", which was held during the years 1977 to 2011. Nantucket
Nantucket () is an island about south from Cape Cod. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, it constitutes the Town and County of Nantucket, a combined county/town government that is part of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Siasconset, Massachusetts
Siasconset is a census designated place (CDP) at the eastern end of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, United States with an elevation of 52 feet (16 m), and a population of 205 at the 2010 census. Although unincorporated, the village has a post office, with the ZIP code 02564. The various spellings of its name, Sconset, Sconset, Seconset, Siasconsett, or Sweseckechi led the Board on Geographic Names to designate its official spelling in 1892. Mike Brady (golfer)
Michael Joseph Brady (April 15, 1887 – December 3, 1972) was an American professional golfer. Biography Brady was born in Brighton, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1887. Brady won nine PGA events between 1916 and 1926. He lost in a three-way playoff to John McDermott in the 1911 U.S. Open. He lost to Walter Hagen in a celebrated playoff in the 1919 U.S. Open at the Brae Burn Country Club. Hagen promptly resigned his club pro job at Oakland Hills Country Club after winning and Oakland Hills promptly hired Brady. Brady subsequently won the 1922 Western Open at Oakland Hills. Brady died in Dunedin, Florida, at the age of 85. Sankaty Head Golf Club
Sankaty Head Golf Club is one of the easternmost golf courses in Massachusetts, perched on the edge of Nantucket Island in Siasconset, Massachusetts. The course was designed by Emerson Armstrong and opened in 1923. It is an 18-hole course. It is one of the few examples of world-class links-style golf outside of the UK (see Shinnecock Hills). The Atlantic wraps around 270 degrees of the layout and the Sankaty Head Lighthouse looms over the front nine. Sankaty members are a driving force behind the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. They also have successfully sustained one of the few remaining caddy camps in the world, Camp Sankaty Head, which has existed since the late 1930s. Membership is private. Miacomet Golf Course
Miacomet Golf Course is a public 18-hole golf course on Nantucket. History In 1956, Ralph P. Marble, a Michigan-native, bought 400-acres of land on Nantucket with dairy farm intentions. The area he bought was called by the old Wampanoag inhabitants "Miacomet", which meant "The Meeting Place". Marble stated that he decided to build a golf course because the dairy market was not doing well. In 1960, Marble began building the Miacomet Golf Course. In 1963, the Miacomet Golf Course opened as a public year-round golf course. In the early 1970s, due to a fire, the clubhouse was rebuilt without spending any money as the island community provided donated lumber and free labor to replace the original. In 1983, Marble put the course up for sale and it was planned to be developed into a 216-lot subdivision.
