Shūzen Tanigawa
is a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party (Japan), Liberal Democratic Party, a member of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan, Diet (national legislature). Early life Tanigawa is a native of Amagasaki, Hyogo and a graduate of Osaka University. He joined the government of Osaka Prefecture in 1957. Political career After serving as deputy mayor of Osaka Prefecture, he was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time in 1995. He served in the House of Councillors until 2013. The is the upper house of the National Diet of Japan. The House of Representatives (Japan), House of Representatives is the lower house. The House of Councillors is the successor to the pre-war House of Peers (Japan), House of Peers. If the two houses disagree on matters of the budget, treaties, or the nomination of the prime minister, the House of Representatives can insist on its decision. In other decisions, the House of Representatives can override a vote of the House of Councillors only by a two-thirds majority of members present.
