Shōnannoumi Momotarō
is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Ōiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. Wrestling for Takadagawa stable, he made his professional debut in March 2014, and became ''sekitori'' when he reached the ''jūryō'' division in January 2023. He was promoted to sumo's Makuuchi, top division in July 2023. His highest rank has been ''Makuuchi#Maegashira, maegashira'' 5. Early life and sumo background Shōnannoumi has no background in sumo, but rather in baseball, a sport he played at Ōiso Elementary School and on the baseball team at Ōiso Junior High School. A is a sumo wrestler's ring name. The tradition of ring names in sumo dates back to the Edo period, where they were used as a means to attract customers and hide the identities of the ''rikishi''. Like standard Japanese names, a ''shikona'' consists of a surname and a personal, or given name, and the full name is written surname first. However, the personal name is rarely used outside formal or ceremonial occasions. Thus, the former ''yokozuna'' is usually referred to as simply ''Asashōryū''.
