Shwe Oung Thame
Shwe Oung Thame (born Aung Thein; 1932–1994) was a Burmese painter with a high reputation among modernists in Burma. Although older than Win Pe and Paw Oo Thet, he did not arrive on the modernist scene until a few years after them. Later he would join Paw Thame and the group at Peacock Gallery in their modernist experimentations. He was born Aung Thein but later changed the spelling of his name in English and added the prefix Shwe, meaning gold, signing his paintings Shwe Oung Thame. Life / Early Training Shwe Oung Thame was born in Yangon and was introduced to painting at a young age. He studied under the well-known master, Ba Thet. Beginning in 1961, he showed more than 300 paintings at Sarpaybeikman Exhibitions. Work Shwe Oung Thame was an important artist in the middle period in the development of modernist art in Burma. Paw Oo Thet
Paw Oo Thet ( my, ပေါ်ဦးသက်, ; 1936 – 13 April 1993) was a Burmese painter, prominent in the Mandalay art scene who became one of the initiators of a modernistic art movement in Burma in the early 1960s. Early training Paw Oo Thet was born in 1936 in Mandalay, son of an artist who taught art in a public school. He lost his mother when he was young, and was brought up by his father, who taught him to draw and paint. At the age of twelve, shortly after the end of World War II, he lost his right hand while playing with a hand grenade and was forced to learn to write and draw with his left hand. As a school student, he won many prizes in art competitions and participated in some exhibitions, but he did not acquire an education beyond high school. Paw Thame
Paw Thame (1948–2014) was a Burmese-American painter. He was one of the leaders of the modernist art movement in Burma during the 1970s and early 1980s. Paw Thame, Win Pe, Kin Maung Yin and Bagyi Aung Soe were friends at the Peacock Gallery exchanging modernist ideas and concepts, alternatively supporting one another and locked in rivalry. They built on the foundations laid by early Burmese modernists Aung Khin and Kin Maung (Bank). Now recognized as the giants of Burmese modern art, Yangon society in the 1970s disparaged them--"modern art" was literally translated as "psychopathic art" or "crazy art". Win Pe Myint
Win Pe Myint ( my, ဝင်းဖေမြင့်, ; born 1948) is a noted Burmese painter. In 1970, he graduated from Rangoon Arts and Sciences University with a Botany major. He was extremely interested in painting since childhood. He studied under 4 outstanding art masters: Lun Gywe, Shwe Oung Thame, Paw Oo Thet and Thein Han (painter). He worked as an art teacher in Regional College - 3 from 1984 to 1986. He should not be confused with the earlier Burmese painter Win Pe of Mandalay, born in 1936, who was a contemporary of Paw Oo Thet, and one of the early founders of modernist painting in Burma. Win Pe Myint is particularly well known for his excellent still life works, although in recent years he has been painting landscapes and portraits. Aung Soe
''Bagyi'' Aung Soe ( my, ဗဂျီ အောင်စိုး ; 1924–1990) was a Burmese painter renowned for his modernistic, semi-abstract art, which caused such a shock in Burma when it appeared that many called it "psychopathic art". The name "Bagyi" is his phonetic spelling of the word "pangyi", meaning "painting", which he first added to his name in 1955. Santiniketan and Early Life in Burma The Indian government offered him a scholarship in 1951 to study art at Santiniketan, founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, but he chose to return to Burma after only a year. He traveled throughout Burma studying its handicrafts, classical art and architecture, especially that of Bagan. Kin Maung Yin
Kin Maung Yin (Burmese: ခင်မောင်ရင်, 1938–2014) was an influential Burmese artist who was recognized as one of the leaders in the first generation of Burma's modern art movement together with Win Pe and Paw Oo Thet. Kin Maung Yin was the leader of this group which in addition to Win Pe and Paw Oo Thett soon included Baji Aung Soe, Nan Waii, Shwe Oung Thame. He died at Yangon on 10 June 2014 at the age of 76. KMY, as he was sometimes known, was born Frank Sewell. His father was a Scot in the British Army who married a local and lived in the village shunned by other British but he was happy. Lun Gywe
Lun Gywe ( my, လွန်းကြွယ်, ; born 24 October 1930) is a Burma, Burmese painter who works in oil and watercolor. Outside of Myanmar his work has been exhibited, often in solo shows, in Japan, the Republic of Korea, the People's Republic of China, Australia, New York City, the Republic of Singapore. Life Lun Gywe was born in Yangon, Myanmar on 24 September 1930, and was raised by his mother after his father died when he was five months old. From an early age he spent much of his time drawing. He studied under Thet Win, Chit Maung, San Win (painter), San Win, Thein Han (painter) and Ngwe Gaing, and graduated from the Art Institute of Teacher's Training in 1954. Mogok
Mogok (, ; Shan: , ) is a town in the Thabeikkyin District of Mandalay Region of Myanmar, located north of Mandalay and north-east of Shwebo. History Mogok is believed to have been founded in 1217 by three lost Shan hunters who discovered rubies at the base of a collapsed mountain. According to the tale, the hunters returned to their home in Momeik and offered the precious stones to the local saopha who established a village in what would become modern-day Mogok. Following the 1885 Third Anglo-Burmese War in which the British conquered and annexed the hitherto independent Upper Burma, in 1886 the British launched a military expedition to "open up" the ruby mines at Mogok and make them available to British merchants. An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse refers to a practitioner in the visual arts only.
