Shoup Rock Shelters
The Shoup Rock Shelters are two prehistoric rock shelters located in Lemhi County, Idaho. The rock shelters, which were excavated in 1965, are located in a rift valley within the Bitterroot Range, near the Salmon River. The shelters provide evidence that the surrounding area had been occupied for at least 8000–8500 years before the present. In addition, the continuity of the archaeological remains found at the site suggests that the original inhabitants are the ancestors of the Northern Shoshone and stayed in the region permanently after settling it. The rock shelters were added to the National Register of Historic Places The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic v ... on November 8, 1974. Shoup's Mountain Battery
The Shoup's Mountain Battery was a Confederate Army artillery battery during the American Civil War. It was also known as Shoup's Battery. At least two of the battery officers later served in the 8th Arkansas Field Battery. Organization After the battle of Pea Ridge, General Earl Van Dorn was ordered to move his Army of the West across the Mississippi and cooperate with Confederate forces in Northern Mississippi. Hindman arrived to assume command of the new Trans-Mississippi District, he found almost nothing to command. He quickly began organizing new regiments, but his most pressing need was for arms for the new forces he was organizing, including the artillery. With Hindman's first order, dated May 31, 1862 at Little Rock, he announced his staff, including the appointment of Major Francis A. Shoup, Chief of Artillery. Shoup had served as chief of ... Shoup Voting Machine Corporation
The Shoup Voting Machine Corporation was an American manufacturer of voting machines, founded in New Jersey in 1905 by Samuel R. Shoup. It changed names and locations over the years, before going out of business as Advanced Voting Solutions, Inc. of Frisco, Texas in 2015. History Safemaker Jacob H. Meyers created the Automatic Voting Machine in 1888 and established the Automatic Voting Machine Corporation (AVM) in 1898. Samuel R. Shoup followed his example, built his own lever voting machine and founded the Shoup Voting Machine Corporation in 1905. It "operated on a limited scale", until "the development and sale of the model 2.5 in the mid 1930s turned the corporation into a successful and profitable operation." The two rivals grew to dominate the American market. By 1928, one of six citizens registered their votes on an AVM or Shoup machine. In all, Shoup sold 100,000 lever-operated voting machines, half of which were still working and in use for the 2000 presidential election. ...
