Clara Shortridge Foltz
Clara Shortridge Foltz (July 16, 1849 – September 2, 1934) was an American lawyer, the first female lawyer on the West Coast, and the pioneer of the idea of the public defender. The Criminal Courts Building in downtown Los Angeles was renamed after her in 2002, and is now known as the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Early life and legal education Foltz was born Clarissa Shortridge in Milton, Indiana, to Talitha and Elias Willetts Shortridge (a lawyer and preacher). Prior to the Civil War, the family moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where Foltz attended a co-educational school (rare at the time). In December 1864, at age 15, she eloped with a farmer and Civil War veteran named Jeremiah D. Foltz, and they began having children. However, he had difficulty supporting his family. Belle Hunt Shortridge (, Hunt; 1858 – November 24, 1893) was an American author of poetry, novels, short stories, and juvenile literature. She was the first person of European descent to be born in Wise County, Texas. She was a versatile and prolific writer, when the brief time allotted to her is considered. She published a volume of poems entitled ''Lone Star Lights'' (1890), two novels, ''Held in Trust'' (1892) and ''Circumstance'' (1893), and numerous short stories and sketches. Shortridge died in 1893. Early years and education Belle Hunt was born in 1858, at Cactus Hill, Texas, near Decatur, Texas. She was the first child of European ancestry born in Wise County. Jennie Shortridge (born September 23, 1959) is a best-selling novelist and off-and-on musician. Biography Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota Shortridge grew up in Maryland and Colorado before relocating to the Pacific Northwest. She now resides in Seattle, Washington with her Australian husband, Matt Gani. Citing an unhappy home life with a mentally ill mother, Shortridge ventured out on her own at the age of seventeen and began to support herself through a series of office jobs, cooking jobs, and a stint as a plumber, all the while also performing in bands as a lead singer. A job with a small advertising firm began her marketing career, leading to a position as director of sales and marketing for a Denver visual imaging firm during the 1980s and early 1990s. Early life and education Shortridge was born in Winona, Minnesota. He attended Macalester College. Political career After graduating from Macalester College, Shortridge became an intern, then paid staffer, of Texas Representative Dick Armey, eventually working for him for eleven years. He left Armey's employment in 2001 to become a lobbyist for Enron, a position he held for approximately six months before the company went into bankruptcy as a result of the Enron scandal.
