Shonai Airport
is a regional airport in Sakata, Yamagata, Japan. The municipalities of Tsuruoka and Shōnai are also near the airport. History The airport opened in 1991 after lobbying efforts by local chambers of commerce, as the area was highly isolated from the major cities of Tokyo and Osaka, requiring half a day of travel to reach either. All Nippon Airways (ANA) initially operated service to both Tokyo (Haneda) and Osaka (Itami), but cancelled the Osaka service in 2009. There was also nonstop service to Sapporo from 1995 to 2007. History The area of present-day Sakata was the location of the provincial capital of ancient Dewa Province, although the precise location has yet to be discovered by archaeologists. A port at the mouth of the Mogami River is known to have existed since the Kamakura period. Although silting rendered it less important in the Muromachi period, the area developed as a major center for the coastal trade during the Edo period. By the early Meiji period, the Honma clan, a local merchant clan, dominated trade and emerged as the largest landholder in Japan. is a railway station in the city of Sakata, Yamagata, Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Lines Sakata Station is served by the Uetsu Main Line. Narita International Airport ( ja, 成田国際空港, Narita Kokusai Kūkō) , also known as Tokyo-Narita, formerly and originally known as , is one of two international airports serving the Greater Tokyo Area, the other one being Haneda Airport (HND). It is about east of central Tokyo in Narita, Chiba. The conceptualization of Narita was highly controversial and remains so to the present-day, especially among local residents in the area.
