Shoghakat Church
The Church of Shoghakat ( hy, Շողակաթ եկեղեցի; meaning "drop of light" because of the ray of light that came down from heaven upon Hripsime's martyrs) was erected in 1694 by Prince Aghamal Sorotetsi during the reign of Catholicos Nahabed I in the city of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin), in Armenia's Armavir Province. History The church sits on the holy site where a group of unnamed nuns following Gayane and Hripsime were martyred during the time of the conversion of Armenia to Christianity in the year 301 AD. The 5th-century Armenian historian Agathangelos wrote that the young and beautiful Hripsime who at the time was a Christian nun in Rome, was to be forcefully married to the Roman emperor Diocletian. She and the abbess Gayane among other nuns fled the tyrant emperor and left to Armenia. The pagan Armenian King Trdat received a letter from Diocletian in which he described her beauty. The Shoghakat Church or Shoghagat Church (Armenian: , ''T’avrizhi Surb Shoghakat yekeghets’i'', Persian: ) is an Armenian Apostolic church in Tabriz, East Azerbaijan Province, Iran completed in 1940. Location Saint Shoghakat Church is located at the Armenian cemetery of Tabriz, which is surrounded by Charm Street, Mashruteh-Boulevard and Bolvar-e-Mollasadra, at Charm Street opposite to the Faculty of Architecture of Tabriz Islamic Arts University, the former Khosravi Leather Factory, not far from the southern end of South Shariati (South Shahnaz). History In old times, the Armenian Christians of Tabriz used to bury their deceased at the cemetery near Mariam-Nanna Church in Maralan. Shoghakat, Armenia
Shoghakat ( hy, Շողակաթ) is a village and a rural community in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia, located near Lake Sevan, northwest of the Artanish Peninsula. The village was founded in the 1810s by Mordvins exiled from Russia. At the beginning of the 20th century Turks settled in the village. In 1988-1989 Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan settled in the village. Toponymy The village was formerly known as ''Nadezhdino'', ''Shordzhalu'' and later ''Shorzha'' ( hy, Շորժա) until November 2017. Historical sites A 17th-century chapel and cemetery are located along the southern outskirts of the village. On the hill overlooking Shoghakat, there are the ruins of another chapel.
