Shittah Tree
Shittah tree (Hebrew: שטה) or the plural " shittim" was used in the Tanakh to refer to trees belonging to the genera ''Vachellia'' and '' Faidherbia'' (both formerly classed in '' Acacia''). ''Faidherbia albida'', ''Vachellia seyal'', ''Vachellia tortilis'', and '' Vachellia gerrardii'' can be found growing wild in the Sinai Desert and the Jordan River Valley. In the Exodus, the ancient Israelites were commanded to use "shittah wood" to make various parts of the Tabernacle and of the Ark of the Covenant. This was most likely ''Vachellia seyal'' or ''Vachellia tortilis''. "The wild acacia (''Vachellia nilotica''), under the name of ''sunt'', everywhere represents the ''seneh'', or ''senna'', of the burning bush. Acacia (Vachellia)
''Vachellia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae, commonly known as thorn trees or acacias. It belongs to the subfamily Mimosoideae. Its species were considered members of genus ''Acacia'' until 2009. ''Vachellia'' can be distinguished from other acacias by its capitate inflorescences and spinescent stipules. Before discovery of the New World, Europeans in the Mediterranean region were familiar with several species of ''Vachellia'', which they knew as sources of medicine, and had names for them that they inherited from the Greeks and Romans. The wide-ranging genus occurs in a variety of open, tropical to subtropical habitats, and is locally dominant. In parts of Africa, ''Vachellia'' species are shaped progressively by grazing animals of increasing size and height, such as gazelle, gerenuk, and giraffe. The genus in Africa has thus developed thorns in defence against such herbivory. Nomenclature By 2005, taxonomists had decided that ''Acacia sensu lato' ...

Abila (Peraea)
Abila ( ar, ابيلا) was an ancient city east of the Jordan River in the Plains of Moab, later Peraea, near Livias, about twelve km northeast of the north shore of the Dead Sea. The site is identified with modern Khirbet el-Kafrayn, Jordan and identified on the Madaba Map as an unnamed icon.Glueck (1943), pp. 7–26 (see 15, 21). There is a widely supported theory that in the Hebrew Bible, it is referred to as Abel-Shittim, as well as in the shorter forms Shittim and Ha-Shittim.Thomson (1886)Glueck (1951), p. 378.Glueck (1943), p. 15.Miller & Tucker (1974)Harrison (1983)MacDonald (2000) Biblical Abel-Shittim Abel-Shittim, Hebrew meaning "Meadow of the Acacias", is found only in the Book of Numbers (); but Ha-Shittim (Hebrew meaning "The Acacias"), evidently the same place, is mentioned in Numbers, Joshua, and Micah (, , ). It was the forty-second and last encampment of the Israelites, associated with infamous Baal-peor incident with the Midianites (). It was also the fina ...
