was a film director and screenwriter from Japan. Born in Tokyo, he debuted as an assistant director in Akira Kurosawa's 1961 film ''Yojimbo''. Isamu Togawa
was a Japanese writer and political commentator. Togawa was born in the city of Hiratsuka in Kanagawa Prefecture. His father was the novelist and former mayor of Hiratsuka Sadao Togawa and his younger brother was the novelist Itaru Kikumura. Life and career After graduating from Shonan Secondary, now Kanagawa Prefectural Shonan High School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Politics and Economics at Waseda University. Afterwards he was called up to serve in the army, but was found to be ill during the physical exam and received a temporary deferment. He was called up again after recovering but the war ended soon after so he returned to his studies at Waseda and graduated. He joined ''Yomiuri Shimbun'' in 1947. Akira Yoshimura
was an award-winning Japanese writer. Internationally he is best known for his novels ''Shipwrecks'' and ''On Parole''. Life and work Yoshimura was the president of the Japanese writers' union and a PEN member. He published over 20 novels, of which ''On Parole'' and ''Shipwrecks'' are internationally known and have been translated into several languages. In 1984 he received the Yomiuri Prize for his novel ''Hagoku'' (, ''On Parole'') based on the true story of Yoshie Shiratori. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Yoshimura's nonfiction chronicle of three previous tsunamis on the coast of Sanriku, ''Sanriku Kaigan Otsunami'' received an influx of orders, requiring a reprint of 150,000 copies. is a 1977 Japanese film directed by Shirō Moritani. Based on the novelist Jirō Nitta's recounting of the Hakkōda Mountains incident, the film tells the story of two infantry regiments of the Imperial Japanese Army, consisting of 210 men, that tried to traverse the Hakkōda Mountains in the winter of 1902, in preparation for the anticipated Russo-Japanese War. The film was Japan's submission to the 50th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee.
