Shirkers
''Shirkers'' is a 2018 British-American documentary film by Singapore-born filmmaker Sandi Tan about the making of an independent thriller featuring a teenage assassin set in Singapore. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in January and won the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award, making her the second Singapore-born filmmaker after Kirsten Tan (''Pop Aye'', 2017) to win an award at the festival. It was also nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Documentary. ''Shirkers'' was released on October 26, 2018, on Netflix. Jasmine Ng
Jasmine Ng Kin Kia ( zh, 黃錦佳; born 1972) is a Singaporean director known for co-directing the feature film '' Eating Air'' with Kelvin Tong, the documentary film '' Pink Paddlers'' and the short film ''Moveable Feast'', which she co-directed alongside Tong and Sandi Tan. She is also a part-time film lecturer at the National University of Singapore. Early life and education While Ng was studying at Singapore Chinese Girls' School, she filmed her own rendition of Swan Lake with the "odd-sized girls" in her class, which she titled ''Duck Pond''. She studied at Victoria Junior College. Sandi Tan
Sandi Tan (born 1972 in Singapore) is a film critic, writer, and filmmaker. After attending the University of Kent, she wrote as the film critic for ''The Straits Times'' from 1995 to 1997 before attending Columbia University's film school and earning a Master of Fine Arts in Screenwriting. Her first short film, ''Moveable Feast'', was her entry in the 1996 Singapore International Film Festival. Tan has worked as the director for short films ''Moveable Feast'' (1996) and ''Gourmet Baby'' (2001), but is best known for her full-length 2018 documentary, ''Shirkers''. ''Shirkers'' made its debut at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, at which it won the Directing Award: World Cinema Documentary. The Cinema Eye Honors are awards recognizing excellence in nonfiction or documentary filmmaking and include awards for the disciplines of directing, producing, cinematography and editing. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) is a non-profit organization founded in 2006. It is based in New York City and is dedicated to supporting work by and about women in the film industry. The AWFJ is composed of 84 professional female movie critics, journalists, and feature writers working in print, broadcast, and online media. The British Film Institute describes the AWFJ as an organization that collects articles by its (mainly U.S.-based) members, gives annual awards, and "supports films by and about women".
