Amos Urban Shirk
Amos Urban Shirk ( 1890 – October 20, 1956) was an American businessman, author and reader of encyclopedias. As a businessman he worked in the food industry. He wrote ''Marketing Through Food Brokers'', published in 1939 by McGraw-Hill. He invented a synthetic chicle and introduced vitamin capsules to grocery stores. He was also renowned as a prodigious reader. Shirk read the entire 23-volume 1911 ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' from cover to cover in four and a half years, reading on average three hours per evening, and taking two to six months per volume. As of 1934, he had begun reading the 14th edition, saying he found it a "big improvement" over the 11th, and saying that "most of the material had been completely rewritten". Shirk did not limit himself to ''Britannica''. He also read Henry Smith Williams's 24-volume '' Historians' History of the World'', which took him two years, as well as an 18-volume set of works by Alexandre Dumas, a 32-volume set of Honoré de Balzac, and ...

Bill Shirk
Bill Shirk (born May 3, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American escape artist, radio personality, broadcast entrepreneur and actor. Biography Radio broadcasting Shirk graduated from Ball State University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Shirk has owned and started radio stations in Muncie, Indianapolis, Cloverdale and Lebanon, Indiana. Shirk was the Station Manager, Sales Manager, Program Director, Production Manager and Afternoon Disc Jockey on WERK Radio, in Muncie, Indiana from 1968 to 1972. Shirk became the General Manager and a DJ at WXLW in Indianapolis in 1972 and then became the owner in 1974 and in 1991 added WHHH-FM, Hot 96.3 as owner and DJ. Currently, he is the President and CEO of Hoosier Broadcasting Corporation.

Eugene Leid Shirk (April 14, 1901 – February 17, 1994) was an American politician who served as the Mayor of Reading, Pennsylvania for two terms as a Republican . He was also the president of Berks Community Television, professor at Albright College, and a well known philanthropist. Gary Lee Shirk (born February 23, 1950) is a former professional American football tight end. He played with the New York Giants of the National Football League for seven seasons. He also played in the World Football League for the Memphis Southmen and in the United States Football League for the Memphis Showboats. Shirk played college football at Morehead State University. Shirk attended Marysville High School in Ohio before moving onto Morehead State University where he was a four-year starter and was the team MVP in 1972. After playing for Memphis in the WFL in 1974 and 1975, Shirk moved on to the NFL, playing for the New York Giants from 1976 until 1982. USS ''Shirk'' (DD-318) was a ''Clemson''-class destroyer in service with the United States Navy from 1919 to 1930. She was scrapped in 1931. Namesake James W. Shirk was born on 16 July 1832 in Pennsylvania. He was appointed midshipman on 26 March 1849. John Francis Shirk (June 24, 1917 – November 11, 1993) was a professional American football end and defensive end in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted in the fourth round of the 1940 NFL Draft. He played one season for the Chicago Cardinals. During World War II, he served as a captain in the field artillery. Ken Shirk (Kenneth Ivan Shirk, popularly known as Cowman and Cowman A MooHa) is an ultramarathon runner who in 1976 was the ninth person to complete the course of The Western States Trail Ride on foot. In 1977 the Western States Endurance Run was officially established on the same course. As of 2006 he also has raced officially and unofficially in every Ironman World Championship except the first one. The first official Western States Endurance Run was in 1977, but before then a few runners ran with the horses in the Tevis Cup, a 24-hour, 100-mile horse endurance ride. By 1976 nine individuals had completed the course on foot. In 1972 seven soldiers from Fort Riley, Kansas completed Tevis Cup course on foot in less than 48 hours. Next was Gordy Ainsleigh, who completed it on foot in under 24 hours. Ken was ninth in 1976 with a time of 24:30, Ken Shirk is known for wearing a helmet sporting fur and large bovine horns. Matthew Aaron Shirk (born July 9, 1973) is an American lawyer and served as the public defender for Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit. He was elected to the position, which covers Clay, Duval, and Nassau Counties, in 2008 and lost re-election in 2016. He is currently under investigation by the Florida Bar for actions while in office. In August 2022 the Florida Supreme Court unanimously approved suspending Shirk from practicing law for one year.
