The Shire of Nillumbik ( ) is a local government area in Victoria, Australia. It contains outer northern suburbs of Melbourne and rural localities beyond the urban area. It has an area of 432 square kilometres and at th2021 census the Shire had a population of 62,895. It was formed in 1994 from the merger of parts of the Shires of Eltham, Diamond Valley, Healesville and the City of Whittlesea. The Shire uses the tag-line ''The Green Wedge Shire''. The Nillumbik Council offices are located in Civic Drive, Greensborough. The shire's name is derived from the Parish of Nillumbik, which was named in the 1830s the term ''nyilum bik'' meaning "Bad Earth" in the local Aboriginal language Woiwurrung. On 13 October 1998, Nillumbik Council was suspended by then Local Government minister Rob Maclellan, with the state government declaring that infighting was affecting the ability of the council to function. The Shire of Healesville was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1887 until 1994. History Healesville was first incorporated as a shire on 30 September 1887. It annexed parts of the Shire of Yea on 21 April 1925, and parts of the Shire of Eltham on 18 June 1958, while losing land to the Shire of Alexandra on two occasions; 1 October 1963 and 1 October 1984. Eltham North is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 21 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Banyule and Shire of Nillumbik local government areas. Eltham North recorded a population of 6,830 at the 2021 census. Originally an outlying rural part of Eltham, it became a separate locality with the opening of the Eltham North Primary School in 1925. Diamond Creek is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 23 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Diamond Creek recorded a population of 12,503 at the 2021 census. History There are two ideas about where Diamond Creek got its name. Victoria's Register of Geographic Names says that it was because of the way the stones glistened in the creek water. Local legend says it is because of a bull who was trying to cross a creek. The bull had a diamond shaped white patch on its head and found difficulty crossing the creek. Thus the Bullocky named the town after the bull with the diamond shape on its head and the creek it drowned in. Bend of Islands is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, 30 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Bend of Islands recorded a population of 267 at the 2021 census. It is situated on about 635 hectares and is named after a group of small islands at a bend of the Yarra River near Watsons Creek. It is located near the town of Kangaroo Ground. The location was a favourite spot for local anglers in 1939. About 130 allotments range from a half to 12 hectares. Geoff Paine is an Australian television and theatre actor from Melbourne. After graduating from drama school Paine secured a role on the soap opera ''Neighbours'', playing the role of doctor Clive Gibbons. He remained in the role for one year before leaving to pursue other projects. He returned to the role briefly in 1989, with the opportunity to appear in a spin-off series based on the character, but no television network would produce the show.
