This is a list of active ships currently in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy. Royal Netherlands Navy ship prefix In Dutch, ships are given the prefix "Zijner Majesteits" ("his majesty's", abbreviated "Zr.Ms.") or "Hare Majesteits" ("her majesty's", abbreviated as "Hr.Ms."). In English, the Dutch prefix is translated as "HNLMS" for "His/Her Netherland Majesty's Ship". Some authors translate Hr./Zr.Ms. as "HNMS" but that abbreviation is ambiguous: the "N" might stand for "Netherlands" or "Norway". The most common way to avoid this ambiguity is to use "HNLMS" and "HNoMS" respectively. The Royal Netherlands Navy ( nl, Koninklijke Marine, links=no) is the naval force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. During the 17th century, the navy of the Dutch Republic (1581–1795) was one of the most powerful naval forces in the world and played an active role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Franco-Dutch War, and wars against Spain and several other European powers. The Batavian Navy of the later Batavian Republic (1795–1806) and Kingdom of Holland (1806–1810) played an active role in the Napoleonic Wars, though mostly dominated by French interests. A joint support ship (JSS) is a multi-role naval ship capable of launching and supporting "joint" amphibious operations. It also provides sea-lift, underway support, sea-basing and logistics capabilities for combined army and naval missions. Features JSS's have several common features to support the many roles it can assume for both navies and armies.
