Shipmates Forever
''Shipmates Forever'' is a 1935 American musical film directed by Frank Borzage and written by Delmer Daves. Set at the United States Naval Academy, the film stars Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, Lewis Stone, Ross Alexander, John Arledge, Eddie Acuff, and Dick Foran. The film was released by Warner Bros. on October 12, 1935. Powell, Keeler, Alexander and Arledge combined previously with Borzage and Daves under similar circumstances of plot and character in '' Flirtation Walk'', a film about the United States Military Academy, the year before. The U.S. Navy provided technical assistance for the filming. Locations shots were made at the Naval Academy and a portion of the story's "final cruise" included footage of the battleship USS (BB-33), which conducted midshipmen cruises for the Navy in the 1930s. ''Flirtation Walk'' is a 1934 American romantic musical film written by Delmer Daves and Lou Edelman, and directed by Frank Borzage. It focuses on a soldier ( Dick Powell) who falls in love with a general's daughter (Ruby Keeler) during the general's brief stop in Hawaii but is bereft when she leaves with her father for the Philippines before their relationship can blossom. They are re-united several years later when the soldier is about to graduate from West Point and the general becomes the Academy's Commandant. Arline Pretty (September 5, 1885 – April 14, 1978) was an American film actress of the silent era. Life and career Pretty was born September 5, 1885, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Plebe Summer
Plebe Summer is the summer training program which is required of all incoming freshmen to the United States Naval Academy. The program lasts approximately 7 weeks and consists of rigorous physical and mental training. The stated purpose of Plebe Summer according to the Academy is to "turn civilians into midshipmen". Induction Day Plebe Summer begins at the end of June or the beginning of July. The first day is called Induction Day or "I-Day". On I-Day, all the candidates say goodbye to their parents. A midshipman is an officer of the lowest rank, in the Royal Navy, United States Navy, and many Commonwealth navies.
