Shinjuku Boys
''Shinjuku Boys'' is a 1995 film by Kim Longinotto and Jano Williams. It explores the lives of three transgender men who work at the New Marilyn Club in Tokyo, Japan. Reception In 1995, ''Shinjuku Boys'' won Outstanding Documentary at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, a Silver Hugo Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival and Gold Prize at Houston Film Festival. The film received positive reviews following its 2010 release by Second Run DVD. In a review at ''DVDTalk'', Chris Neilson praised the films directors, commenting that "Through low-key cinéma vérité filmmaking, Longinotto and Williams provide insight into the professional and personal lives of the trio of onnabe ic. Transgender In Asia
A transgender (often abbreviated as trans) person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Many transgender people experience dysphoria, which they seek to alleviate through transitioning, often adopting a different name and set of pronouns in the process. Additionally, they may undergo sex reassignment therapies such as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery to more closely align their primary and secondary sex characteristics with their gender identity. Not all transgender people desire these treatments, however, and others may be unable to access them for financial or medical reasons. Kim Longinotto ( Sally Anne Longinotto-Landseer; born 8 February 1948, London) is a British documentary film maker, well-known for making films that highlight the plight of female victims of oppression or discrimination. Longinotto has made more than 20 films, usually featuring inspiring women and girls at their core. Her subjects have included female genital mutilation in Kenya (''The Day I Will Never Forget''), women standing up to rapists in India (''Pink Saris''), and the story of ''Salma'', an Indian Muslim woman who smuggled poetry out to the world while locked up by her family for decades. The LGBT community in Tokyo is one of the largest in Asia. While Japan does not assign as much moral or social weight to sexuality as in the West, it is still difficult for Japanese people to come out in society as being LGBT; the community reportedly experiences homophobia even amongst those in the community.
