Shimizu Ice Stream () is an ice stream in the Horlick Mountains, draining west-northwest from the area between Wisconsin Range and Long Hills to enter the south flank of Horlick Ice Stream. Ice Stream
An ice stream is a region of fast-moving ice within an ice sheet. It is a type of glacier, a body of ice that moves under its own weight. They can move upwards of a year, and can be up to in width, and hundreds of kilometers in length. They tend to be about deep at the thickest, and constitute the majority of the ice that leaves the sheet. In Antarctica, the ice streams account for approximately 90% of the sheet's mass loss per year, and approximately 50% of the mass loss in Greenland. The shear forces cause deformation and recrystallization that drive the movement, this movement then causes topographic lows and valleys to form after all of the material in the ice sheet has been discharged. Sediment also plays an important role in flow velocity, the softer and more easily deformed the sediment present, the easier it is for flow velocity to be higher. Horlick Mountains
The Horlick Mountains are a mountain range in the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica. Some sources indicate that the designation includes the Ohio Range, the Long Hills, and all of the Wisconsin Range, while others suggest that it includes only the eastern portion of the Queen Maud Mountains and the main body of the Wisconsin Range. At one point the designation also included the Thiel Mountains. The mountains were discovered in two observations by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1933–35, one by Kennett L. Rawson from a position in about , at the end of his southeastern flight of November 22, 1934, and another by Quin Blackburn in December 1934, from positions looking up Leverett and Albanus Glaciers. Wisconsin Range
The Wisconsin Range () is a major mountain range of the Horlick Mountains in Antarctica, comprising the Wisconsin Plateau and numerous glaciers, ridges and peaks bounded by the Reedy Glacier, Shimizu Ice Stream, Horlick Ice Stream and the interior ice plateau. The range was mapped by the USGS from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–64. Named by US-ACAN for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, which has sent numerous researchers to Antarctica. Most of the upland surface area of the range is the Wisconsin Plateau (), a large ice-capped plain with general elevations above . To the east and southeast, the plateau descends gradually and with only minor ice escarpments to merge with the interior ice plateau; to the north and west, the plateau displays abrupt escarpments and cliffs of over 1,000 metres. Long Hills
The Long Hills () are a group of hills and rock outcroppings about in extent, located midway between the Wisconsin Range and the Ohio Range in the Horlick Mountains of Antarctica. Knack Point marks the north end of the Long Hills. They were mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1958–60, and were named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for William E. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names. Byrd Station
The Byrd Station is a former research station established by the United States during the International Geophysical Year by U.S. Navy Seabees during Operation Deep Freeze II in West Antarctica. History A joint Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines operation supported an overland tractor train traverse that left out of Little America V in late 1956 to establish the station. The train was led by Army Major Merle Dawson and completed a traverse of over unexplored country in Marie Byrd Land to blaze a trail to a spot selected beforehand. The station consisted of a set of four prefabricated buildings and was erected in less than one month by U.S. Navy Seabees. It was commissioned on January 1, 1957. The original station ("Old Byrd") lasted about four years before it began to collapse under the snow.
