Shiloh, Houston County, Texas
Shiloh is a ghost town in Houston County, Texas, United States, just off FM 2110. It was founded by Stephen F. Box in 1834. During the 1840s, religious revivals were held in the town, and attendees from Houston camped in Shiloh. A local school was built in the 1850s. During the Civil War A civil war or intrastate war is a war between organized groups within the same state (or country). The aim of one side may be to take control of the country or a region, to achieve independence for a region, or to change government policies ..., the school was a draft post. After the war, the town declined. By the 1930s, Shiloh had a church and a few scattered houses. In the 1960s, the church remained (as it still does today), as well as very scattered houses. In 1973, a historical marker was placed in the town. Today, only the Methodist church remains. Houston County, Texas
Houston County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 22,066. Its county seat is Crockett. Houston County was one of 46 entirely dry counties in the state of Texas, until voters in a November 2007 special election legalized the sale of alcohol in the county. Houston County was the first new county created under the 9-year Republic of Texas on June 12, 1837. The original boundaries of Houston County also included all of present-day Anderson and Trinity Counties, and portions of present-day Henderson and Polk Counties. The county is named for Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas and Governor of Texas. Other than being named for the same person, Houston County is not related to the City of Houston, which is located about to the south, in Harris County.
