Pomo People
The Pomo are an Indigenous people of California. Historical Pomo territory in Northern California was large, bordered by the Pacific Coast to the west, extending inland to Clear Lake, and mainly between Cleone and Duncans Point. One small group, the Northeastern Pomo, lived in the vicinity of present-day Stonyford in Colusa County, separated from the core Pomo area by lands inhabited by Yuki and Wintuan speakers. The name Pomo derives from a conflation of the Pomo words and . It originally meant "those who live at red earth hole" and was once the name of a village in southern Potter Valley near the present-day community of Pomo, California in Mendocino County. It may have referred to local deposits of the red mineral magnesite, used for red beads, or to the reddish earth and clay, such as hematite, mined in the area. Hopland (formerly Sanel) is a census-designated place in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is located on the west bank of the Russian River south-southeast of Ukiah, in the Sanel Valley, at an elevation of . The population was 661 at the 2020 census, down from 756 at the 2010 census. Stephen Powers (1840–1904) was an American journalist, ethnographer, and historian of Native American tribes in California. He traveled extensively to study and learn about their cultures, and wrote notable accounts of them. His articles were first published over a series of years in the '' Overland Monthly'' journal, but collected in ''The Tribes of California'' (1877) published by the US Geological Survey. Early years Stephen Powers was born in Waterford, Ohio. He attended and graduated from the recently established University of Michigan in 1863. During the American Civil War years, Powers served as a Union Army correspondent for the ''Cincinnati Commercial'' newspaper. In 1869 Powers left Ohio for the West. He walked across the Southern and Western United States to his destination of San Francisco, California.
