Shi Ping (politician)
Shi Ping (Chinese: 施平; 1 November 1911 – 29 June 2024) was a Chinese academic, political administrator, and supercentenarian. He is posthumously recognised as having been the world's oldest verified living man from the death of Venezuela's Juan Vicente Pérez on 2 April 2024, until his own death. Biography Shi was born Shi Eryi () on 1 November 1911, in Dayao, Yunnan. Between February and August 1931 he studied at the University of Nanking, moving to Zhejiang University in September of the same year and studied there until June 1936. He joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1938, and joined as a soldier and fought with the New Fourth Army in 1941 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. At the time of his death, he was the most senior surviving member of the New Fourth Army. Shi became vice president of Beijing Agricultural University in 1953, holding the post until 1960. China Agricultural University
China Agricultural University (CAU, ; abbreviated as 农大) is a public research university in Beijing, People's Republic of China specializing in agriculture, biology, engineering, veterinary medicine, economics, management, humanities and social science. Second Sino-Japanese War
The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) or War of Resistance (Chinese term) was a military conflict that was primarily waged between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan. The war made up the Chinese theater of the wider Pacific Theater of the Second World War. John Tinniswood
John Alfred Tinniswood (born 26 August 1912) is a British supercentenarian who, at the age of , has been the world's oldest verified living man since the death of 112-year-old Shi Ping of China on 29 June 2024. Personal life John Alfred Tinniswood was born on 26 August 1912 in Liverpool, Lancashire, (now Merseyside) England. During World War II, he could not enlist as a soldier due to his poor eyesight, and as a result, he held an administrative role within the Royal Army Pay Corps as an accountant and auditor. He was also involved in logistical tasks, such as locating stranded soldiers and organising food supplies. He met his future wife, Blodwen (née Roberts), at a dance during the war; they married in 1942 and their only child, Susan, was born in 1944. Tinniswood went on to work as an accountant for Royal Mail and Shell-Mex and BP before retiring in 1972. Blodwen died from lung cancer in 1986, after 44 years of marriage.
